It has been a very busy start to the term in The Arts! “What’s new?”, I hear you say!

Creative Generation

Over the past few months, we have had three very talented students involved in Creative Generation - State Schools on Stage. This culminated in a huge weekend of performances at the Convention Centre from Thursday 18th – Saturday 20th July. Congratulations to Evey F (Year 7), Jayden F (Year 11) and Sarah (Year 12) for being selected to participate in this incredible showcase of the depth of talent in the Arts in our Queensland state schools. It was a fantastic show, made all the more so by these talented young musicians.  Photo credits: Tracy Fulwood, Jayden Fulwood, Elizabeth Fletcher, Rebecca Wang

We hope you enjoyed this fantastic opportunity to work with world class tutors and conductors in your pursuit of musical excellence and perform at the Conservatorium.

Congratulations also to Catriona W who has been selected on Cello for the upcoming SHEP QLD program – this is the highest level overed to students from around the state and we are thrilled that Cat has been included. Finally, congratulations to Alexandria D (Viola), Jefferson D (Trombone) and Charlotte F (Double Bass) who have auditioned successfully for the Australian Honours Ensemble Program to be held at the Conservatorium at the end of September.

Junior Ensemble Workshop

On Monday 29th July all the students in our Concert Band, Vivaldi Strings and Chorale attended a workshop day here at school. They worked closely with guest conductors, Bevan Messenger, Andrea Messenger and Joshua Clifford on new repertoire as well as refining some current pieces. We also had specialist tutors in to work each group – drawing from the talents in our community – a huge thank you to Fons Hartog, Caleb Hodgkinson and Evalyn Lagreig who worked alongside our talented teachers Mrs Dinnis, Mrs Forgan, Ms Donovan and Ms Dargusch on the day. The students certainly got a lot out of their intensive time with our guests – their performances in our afternoon concert were really impressive.

Australian Percussion Eisteddfod

This weekend our percussion ensemble Asymmetry are off to Sydney to compete in the Australian Percussion Eisteddfod. After placing third last year, they are keen to show what a year’s worth of playing can achieve! They will be playing in the group competition on Sunday – be sure to send them good wishes!

Music Extension Final Recital

Wednesday evening, 31st July, saw the final Music Extension Recital for 2023. After six years together, the 12 AMPed class were in incredible form – 6 awesome performances and 7 beautiful compositions. It has been my privilege to watch these young people grow into amazing young artists – each with their own unique voice. They are brilliant!

Students bring the Drama !

Last Friday night the curtain went down for the final time for the year12 Drama students. The IA3 performances were a contemporary take on the Greek tragedy Antigone. Students had studied a variety of styles over the last two years in senior Drama from Absurdist to Political theatre and this final task allowed them to apply this knowledge in a creative and contemporary setting. The students should be incredibly proud of the work they have presented, it was innovative, polished and professional.

It has been such a pleasure working with this fantastic group of very creative and open minded young people. Amazing adventures await them, I know they put their creative skills to good use and make the world a better place.

I hope they look back fondly on the experiences they had in Drama during their high school years and remember all the worlds a stage!
