The Gap State High School Strategic Plan 2022-2025 identifies our goal to work towards sustainable practices to achieve carbon neutrality by 2032.  It is pleasing to note that we are actively achieving outcomes to reach this goal, both with school funded programs and those supported by the Department of Education (DoE).   The school now has solar panels on 4 of our large classroom blocks and on the sports hall roof.  During the July vacation period   over 700 light fittings in rooms across the school were replaced with more energy efficient light fittings – under a DoE program of works.

We were successful in obtaining a grant from the Govt and with a further monetary donation from our P&C Association, we were able to build our Community Kitchen Garden. Scraps from the tuckshop are being recycled into compost and a worm farm, providing nourishment to the soil.  Water is collected from the adjoining building roof, a solar panel is in place to provide an electrical source as required and there is a hydroponics section to complement the in-ground garden beds that are already sprouting into life.

To support our vision of carbon neutrality, the school purchased an electric utility vehicle for use around the school buildings and grounds – a much quieter, low emission vehicle for our Schools Officers, Darryl and Chris as they continue their ongoing maintenance and deliveries around the school.
