Senior English Speaking Union Public Speaking Competition – Grand Final
Congratulations to Amaeh Reed who took part in the Grand Final for the Senior competition of the English-Speaking Union Competition. This competition is extremely high quality and gathers some of the best public speakers from around the state to partake in both a prepared and impromptu speech.
The prepared speech was based on the quote from Benjamin Franklin:
“Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid, the wrong thing at the tempting moment”.
Amaeh’s speech was considered and weaves many different themes and motifs throughout. A small excerpt of the final part of her speech is below, a great reminder of the values of recognising the dignity of each human person, as a key part of our Franciscan values:
“Ladies and Gentlemen, when all is said and done, when all the words have been spoken, it has been suggested that the most enduring tombstone is a well-lived life. Those who loved, who raised others up by their kind words and generous spirit, will be remembered when the forget-me-nots have long withered.
Carve your name on hearts, not on marble.
Choose words of kindness, of empathy and feed the wolf of compassion and generosity.”
Amaeh ended up placing third in the State Finals, a very impressive placing and a testament to her hard work in preparing for these finals.
Battle of the Brains
Academic Captain - Maddy Colclough
In Week 3 and 4, the College held its first-ever ‘Battle of the Brains’ trivia competition as part of the lead up to Cultural Fest. The questions were based on the ‘World Tour with the Wolf Pack’ theme, providing both a fun challenge and an opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge.
The engagement from all year levels was fantastic, and the performance from each house was very impressive. In the Year 7 and 8 round, BP and Greccio tied with 20 points each. In the Year 9 and 10 round, Perugia and VS tied with 23 points, and in the Year 11 and 12 round, BP and Rieti also tied with 23 points. Across all three rounds, we gave extra points for houses who produced more than one table as participation was so great! The winners will be revealed next week at assembly.
Debating Mentor Program
This term, we have partnered with the St Anthony’s Debating teams to provide some mentoring and coaching. This was initiated by our Year 10 Debating team members who were keen to share their ideas and skills with young debaters.
