Year 8 News

Exciting news! Last week, six talented Year 8 students presented ideas on behalf of a larger group of their peers, for a new Body Positivity social media campaign to Design students at Chisholm. The Chisholm students will now bring these ideas to life, creating a campaign to be shared across schools and youth services in the City of Greater Dandenong.

There's even potential for a collaboration with the Butterfly Foundation's nationwide program!

Dante Alighieri Italian Poetry Competition

Who was Dante Alighieri and why is he a significant Italian figure?

Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) was an Italian poet, writer and philosopher, best known for his epic poem "The Divine Comedy," which is considered one of the greatest works of world literature. It is composed of three parts (Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso) and it explores the journey of the soul through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Dante's work addresses complex themes of morality, justice and the human condition. Dante has had a profound impact on Western literature as many writers, poets, and thinkers after him, such as Geoffrey Chaucer, John Milton, and T.S. Eliot, have drawn inspiration from his work. Dante is referred to the "Father of the Italian language" and is considered a national symbol of Italy. His works are a cornerstone of Italian literary heritage and his themes of moral and spiritual quest resonate deeply with Italian culture and history.

This year, on Monday 3 June, the students studying Italian in Years 9 and 10 had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Dante Alighieri Italian poetry competition at Melbourne University.

We had a total of sixty-two students take part in this competition, where they were required to recite their chosen poem in Italian with a focus on memorisation, pronunciation and delivery with meaning. Recitation is a highly valuable experience in Language learning and these competitions are an excellent way to enrich the study of Italian language and culture.

Congratulations to all the students in Years 9 and 10 who achieved either a Certificato di Distinzione (Distinction), Certificato di Merito (Merit) or Certificato di Participazione (Participation). Certificates will be distributed soon.

I'm proud to present the results of this competition.

Kildaire Ministries Net Zero Camp

Diya P and Jackie L from Year 11, our Net Zero leaders, participated in Kildare Ministries Net Zero Camp at Holy Cross Centre, Templestowe.

They worked with other students from different Kildare Ministries schools. As a group, they learned and worked together to come up with a plan to enable all Kildare schools work towards a zero emissions target.

They have come back feeling very enthused and full of great ideas to implement at Killester College.

Year 9 Italian Excursion

On Tuesday 23 July, all the Year 9 Italian classes had a wonderful opportunity to immerse themselves in some Italian culture, right here in the city of Melbourne. The topics and themes covered were Italian food culture and the history of Italian migration to Australia.

A trip was organised by the Languages Department to Mediterranean Wholesalers an Italian supermarket in Brunswick; a visit to a small but information-packed Museo Italiano in Carlton and a treasure hunt walk around Lygon Street, Carlton.

All the students arrived on time and looked forward to their day out of the classroom. At the supermarket, they had the opportunity to explore many Italian food products ranging from Delicatessen products, cheeses, juices, a huge selection of pasta, pickled vegetables, traditional Italian cakes, desserts and sweets, breads and even Italian cleaning products. They were rewarded by the supermarket owners with a packet of wafer biscuits each as a little memento of their visit.

At the Museo Italiano, the students had the opportunity to see migrant objects and read and learn about the experiences of Italian migrants to Australia. In particular, their departure experiences, how they made their new life here in Australia in the face of difficulties such as finding work and learning the language, as well as their contributions to Australian culture.

They then went on a treasure hunt and explored Lygon Street and had to locate various Italian restaurants, cafes, food and technology/equipment stores. All in all, the weather was on our side and everyone had a great day.

Here are some comments from the students:

“I enjoyed being able to see different Italian foods and have fun with my friends. Having the ability to buy things was also very fun” Georgia K.

“I learnt about different types of Italian cheese and meat. I enjoyed finding everything and the workers were very nice.” Harveen M.

“I enjoyed the scavenger hunt around the supermarket and the free wafer snacks” Natalie V.

“The different types of coffee, pasta, meat, and cheese were very interesting.” Titiska S.

“I enjoyed exploring lots of the different places on Lygon Street.” Tanesha K.

“I liked how the museum was interactive.” Ruby D.

“I enjoyed and learnt filling out the timeline of the migration of Italians to Australia.” Stephanie V.

“I loved the vibe of Lygon Street and how there are many different shops that have been there for ages. I also really liked photo-taking activities, it gave us a sense of direction about where to go”  Lisa T.

All in all the students had a great day out. The Language Department thanks the students for their exceptional behaviour and looks forward to taking next year's Year 9 students on this excursion as well.

As Federico Fellini would say “ A different language is a different vision of life”.

Grazie!
