Careers Update

Term 3 Highlights: Exploring Career Pathways with Middle School Students

Term 3 is an exciting and dynamic period for our Middle School students as they dive into exploring career pathways and setting their personal goals through Career Action Plans. Here’s a look at some of the recent and upcoming events and activities:

Year 7 & 8 Extended Homegroup Pathways Program:

Our Year 7 and 8 students have eagerly engaged in career and pathway lessons that spark curiosity about life beyond the classroom. These sessions have broadened their horizons, helping them connect their passions with potential future careers.

Year 8 Pathway Discovery Event:

Earlier this term, all Year 8 students participated in the Pathway Discovery Event. During this event, students received valuable insights from Subject Leaders about the subjects offered in 2025 and how these choices can shape their journey through senior school and beyond. This information will empower students to make informed decisions as they plan their studies for the next year.

Please note that Year 8 into Year 9 Subject Selection is scheduled for Monday, 19th August, during Extended Homegroup. If your child is absent on this day, they can complete the selection process at home using the materials provided in their Homegroup lesson plan.

We encourage parents to discuss subject options with their child to ensure they are well-prepared. You can access the Year 9 Course Information Booklet on the EMC Careers website here.

Year 9 into Year 10 Course Counselling:

This week, our Year 9 students took part in a course counselling session, where they discussed and finalised their subject choices for 2025. By creating an environment that encourages exploration and offers guidance, we are helping our students navigate the exciting opportunities that await them.

Tips for the Ultimate Study Space Set-up

You might be surprised to hear it, but where you study is just as important as how you study. If you’ve ever found yourself curled up with your laptop in bed and wondering why you can’t seem to concentrate, or if your siblings keep distracting you when you’re trying to study in the living room, this article is for you.

The environment you choose to study in plays a huge role when it comes to how productive and motivated you feel. If you’ve been struggling to focus and get things done, creating the perfect study space can seriously make all the difference.

To help you boost your concentration and productivity, we’ve come up with some effective tips for setting up a study space that works for you. With these ideas, you’ll transform your study area into a place where you can thrive.

Choose the right location

The first step to creating an ideal study space is choosing the right location. Look for a spot that’s quiet, well-lit, and free from distractions. This could be a corner of your bedroom, a dedicated study room, or even a cozy (and quiet) nook in your home.

  • Quiet: Avoid high-traffic areas where you’re likely to be interrupted.
  • Well-lit: Natural light is best, but a good desk lamp can work wonders too.
  • Distraction-free: Keep your study area away from TV, video games, and other distractions.

Organise your space

An organised space can help clear your mind and keep you focused. Make sure your study area is tidy and well-organised, with everything you need within easy reach.

  • Declutter: Keep only the essentials on your desk – your computer, textbooks, and notebooks.
  • Storage: Use shelves, drawers, or bins to store supplies and keep your space neat.
  • Personalise: Add a few personal touches, like photos or motivational quotes, to make your space inviting and comfortable.

Why not give your desk a makeover to help get you in the groove? You can even follow along with this video for inspo.

Invest in comfortable furniture

There’s nothing worse than getting a sore back from sitting hunched over at your desk all day. Comfort is key when it comes to studying for long periods, so invest in a good chair and desk that support good posture and reduce strain on your body.

  • Ergonomic chair: A chair with good lumbar support can prevent back pain and improve focus.
  • Proper desk: Your desk should be at a height that allows you to work comfortably without hunching over.
  • Footrest: Consider a footrest if your feet don’t touch the ground when seated.

Minimise digital distractions

While technology is a great tool, it can also be a major distraction, so be sure to take steps to minimise digital interruptions.

  • Phone-free zone: Keep your phone out of reach or on silent mode while you study.
  • Website blockers: Use apps or browser extensions to block distracting websites during study sessions.
  • Focus apps: Consider apps that help you stay on track, like timers or productivity trackers.

Create a study routine

Establishing a study routine can help train your brain to be more focused and productive as you learn. If you’re looking for something to spice up your study routine, why not try this article on creative study hacks? In the meantime, here’s some ideas:

  • Set specific times: Study at the same times each day to build a consistent routine.
  • Take breaks: Incorporate short breaks to rest and recharge – we recommend the tried and tested Pomodoro method.
  • Plan your sessions: Outline what you need to know and set goals for each session.

Incorporate relaxation elements

It’s been proven that relaxing helps learning, so it makes sense that curating a relaxing atmosphere can improve your overall study experience and reduce stress. Here’s some ideas:

  • Plants: Greenery can improve air quality and create a calming atmosphere.
  • Aromatherapy: Scents like lavender or peppermint can help you relax and stay alert.
  • Background music: Soft instrumental music or nature sounds can enhance concentration for some students.

Try this classical music for study playlist as a starting point:

Creating a study space that enhances concentration and productivity doesn’t have to be difficult.

With these tips, you’ll be on your way to academic success in no time.

WWOOF your way around the world

Ever thought about WWOOFing in your gap year?

No, we’re not just barking at you – WWOOF stands for Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms, and it’s a super popular organisation that pairs you with a farm across the globe. You’ll work on an organic farm of your choice, in your preferred country, and receive free food and accommodation in exchange for help around the farm.

If you’ve ever dreamed of spending time on a farm, or wanted a budget friendly way to explore the world, WWOOFing could be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Why WWOOF?

First of all, this is not a monetary exchange program, so if you’re like us you’re probably already excited at the prospect of not having to pay for food or board. But there’s way more to this experience than just saving money. Here’s what you could gain from a WWOOF adventure:

Learn new skills

One of the most rewarding aspects of WWOOFing is the opportunity to acquire new skills. From organic farming techniques and sustainable living practices to learning about local cultures and languages, the possibilities are vast.

For example, you might find yourself learning about permaculture, animal husbandry, or even eco-building. These skills are not only valuable but can also be a great addition to your resume.

Experience different cultures

WWOOFing is an immersive cultural experience. Living and working with local hosts gives you a unique perspective on their way of life, so it’s a fantastic opportunity to learn about new cultures, make lifelong friends, and see the world from a different viewpoint.

“WWOOFing has taught me that there’s other ways, other lifestyles, that are possible and great and sustainable for the environment. I’ve also met a lot of people who are doing what they want with their life – their “job” isn’t a job for them, and I think that’s something I really want for myself.”

– Rebecca, WWOOFer

Enhance your career prospects

WWOOFing can also be a great way to enhance your career prospects. The skills and experiences you gain can be directly relevant to many fields, including agriculture, environmental science, and tourism. Even if your career path lies elsewhere, the independence, problem-solving, and teamwork skills you develop will be highly valued by future employers.

Planning your WWOOFing adventure

If you’re considering WWOOFing, the first step is to research your options. There are WWOOFing opportunities in countries all over the world, from Italy to Zambia. Consider what you want to gain from the experience, and choose a location that aligns with your interests and goals.

Start by joining WOOF

To get started, join the WWOOF organisation in the country you’re interested in. You’ll gain access to a database of hosts and can start planning your adventure – it’s important here that you make sure to communicate with potential hosts to understand their expectations and ensure it’ll be a good fit for you.

Be prepared

While WWOOFing is an exciting adventure, it’s important to be prepared. Make sure you understand the work involved, and be ready for a hands-on experience. Pack appropriately, and be open-minded and flexible – and most of all, be prepared to have a life-changing experience.
