SPOTLIGHT
YEAR 5
It's always a good day to have a great day in Year 5! At the end of Term 2 we had our excursion to Nundle which was excellent! On our excursion we went on a tour of a Gold mine and the Nundle Woollen Mill. It was interesting looking around the mine at the artefacts and listening to stories from miners in the local area. Some of us were even lucky enough to look at some real gold that had been discovered. Mr French read us some Dreamtime stories and other stories written by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors in preparation for NAIDOC week which was in the holidays. We created our own stories using symbols. The Stroogle came for a visit to 5W and we had the best time making oobleck as part of our Science unit.
This term we have immersed ourselves back into all aspects of school life. We have decorated our classrooms to show our support for the incredibly talented Australian Olympic team and we can’t wait to dress in ‘Green and Gold’ on Friday, an excellent initiative by Xander! Year 5 have also started reading the Dragonkeeper by Carole Wilkinson in Literacy. Carole Wilkinson is an Australian author and the novel explores themes of trust, courage, power and greed. It is a captivating story which has us hooked everyday! We are learning about multiplication in Mathematics and have enjoyed mixing into Maths groups for this topic. Year 5 are also lucky enough to be participating in Rugby Union skills sessions every Monday (some of us were even on the news this week!).
We can't believe it's Term 3 already because we've been too busy having fun in Year 5! Bring on the next 6 weeks!
DIOCESAN STAGE 3 DEBATING COMPETITION
This week our Stage 3 debating students competed in the third round of the Diocesan Debating Competition. Sara Scott, Bailey Maher, Nate Drury and Molly Sheridan versed Holy Trinity Inverell and were the affirmative team. Sophia Shanahan, Lara Macdonald, Lily Cannon and Mia Simpson versed St Edward's Tamworth and were also the affirmative team. Both teams had to argue that "We should teach current affairs instead of history".
Both teams delivered well thought out and convincing arguments, however they were both unsuccessful in this round. There is one more round to go and I can't wait to see how well they finish off the competition!
