Careers Update

Work Experience

On Monday the 29th of July to Friday the 2nd of August (inclusive) our Year 10 students participated in our Work Experience Program.

Work experience is a one-week placement where students gain insights into the industry and the workplace in which they are located. It provides students with a valuable opportunity to develop employability skills, explore possible career options, understand employer expectations, and increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence, and self-confidence.

Perfect timing really with the Senior School course counselling coming up!

The students were visited by staff at the college, and it was fantastic to see students enjoying their week at work.

Thank you to the following workplaces for supporting our students during Work Experience Week, it would not be possible to run this program without these fantastic businesses in our community:

Jobskills Expo

Our Vocational Major (VCE-VM) students attended the 2024 Job Skills Expo at Lardner Park, Warragul recently. The Expo targets students to engage them with hands on activities, advice and information about the various skills, jobs and industries that make up our regional workforce. Our students were among 2,400 students from schools across Gippsland who enjoyed exploring a huge variety of exhibits on the day in both the Jobskills Expo pavilion and the Your Gippsland 2035 Pavilion. Some industries who were present include:

  • clean energy.
  • traditional trades.
  • health.
  • community & social services.
  • early childhood.
  • technology.
  • agriculture, dairy & environmental conservation.
  • mining and earthworks.
  • exhibitors offering apprenticeships & traineeships.
  • aviation.
  • technology.
  • Australian Defence Force.

The seminars offered a variety of panel discussions with audience participation encouraged via Q&A style presentations. Many industries were showcased including:

  • emerging industries.
  • agriculture, dairy & horticulture.
  • apprenticeships & traineeships in a variety of trades – automotive, sport & rec, allied health and traditional trades.
  • community & social services.
  • Australian Defence Force.
  • health – emergency services, allied health, mental health, hospitals.

By all accounts the students found this extremely beneficial with the availability of static displays and the short seminars providing practical information and advice to them.

Year 7 Learning to Learn

Over the last several weeks our Year 7 students have started to learn about Career Education and why this is so important. It is an opportunity for our students to learn more about themselves - their strengths and interests and to find new ones along the way. As well as learning about themselves, our students will learn about the world of work through interactive activities. During the ‘Learning to Learn’ class students found out where the Careers room was, why it is there, and who is there to help them. Career exploration is an important step that students take in their career journey designed around a series of activities.

VTAC

Our Year 12’s are beginning the process of their VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) with Careers running sessions during Home Groups on a Friday morning during Term 3. Students will be supported during this entire process.

What is the USI?

You may have heard of the Unique Student Identifier – or USI. It’s made up of ten letters and numbers and is your education number for life. All students doing nationally recognised training, be it a VET in Schools course, First Aid training, or applying to university, must have a USI.

Why do I need a USI?

Without a USI, you won’t be able to access Commonwealth supported places or HELP loans, and you won’t receive your statement of attainment, qualification, or award upon completion of your studies.

Who should get a USI?

If you’re considering a VET in Schools course for next year or if you’re in Year 12 and thinking about further education, create your USI without delay! How do I get a USI? The process is simple and can be completed in less than five minutes using one form of identification, such as a birth certificate or driver’s license.

I’ve forgotten my USI

If you’ve already created a USI but have forgotten your details, you can easily find your USI by following a few simple steps.

Using your USI

A USI also empowers you to take ownership of your education and training journey. With a USI, you can access your VET outcomes online in the form of an authenticated USI VET transcript.

Your VET transcript can be used:

as a credit transfer or to demonstrate pre-requisites for further training as a backup (if the original documentation is lost and cannot be replaced) to provide qualifications to employers and licensing bodies to reduce unnecessary retraining that can result from lost credentials.

If you would like more help or information about the USI, please visit:
