When Mental Health gets Personal
An Inside Look at Supporting Young People
Mentone Grammar School is inviting the greater community to the next seminar in its Mentone Stories series that is designed for and by parents covering a range of topics to help families support our young people to navigate and thrive in today’s complex world.
Presented by Nic Newling
Nic Newling’s personal story follows the highs and lows of having a mood disorder in school, the challenges of being misdiagnosed, and the grief of losing his brother to suicide. He details his temporary efforts to ‘be normal’ and keep his struggles a secret, all while facing the usual challenges that life brings. Nic’s presentation will explore the often-hidden experiences of adolescent mental illness, the crucial role of families and schools, and practical suggestions on how to make a meaningful positive difference. This thought-provoking presentation is emotionally impactful, humorous at times, honest, and most importantly, filled with hope. Many students have already heard Nic’s presentation, so this will be a wonderful opportunity for parents and carers to align their understanding and stimulate discussion around this important topic at home.
