Science Fair

The MCHF Science Fair was held on Wednesday 14th August in the Primary School Hall. This was held during National Science Week which this year had the theme

“Species Survival – more than just sustainability”.

Stage 3 Primary School students immersed themselves in this theme with contributions from some of our best Science students in Year 5 and Year 6:

  • Year 5: Endangered Australian Animals - habitats, ecosystems, conservation
  • Year 6: Water quality - selecting a country and designing a prototype for water filtration to be used on a larger scale based on statistics.

Stage 1 and 2 contributions included from:

  • Year 2: Informative texts on lifecycles of an animal or plant
  • Year 3: Photosynthesis - celery and dye in beakers
  • Year 4: Food chain of a frog - illustrating the interconnections and flow of energy in the ecosystem.

Secondary School contributions included some of our best Student Research Projects (SRP) for Year 8; all of the Year 11 Biology Depth Studies on an inquiry question regarding one of the following human impacts that have caused evolution (natural selection) to occur:

  • Climate change
  • Use of pesticides
  • Overfishing
  • Deforestation
  • Hunting & Invasive species

The Year 11 Physics class had devised a skill tester which proved very challenging. The students demonstrated some of the properties of magnetism as well. Our Chemistry display featured a demonstration of chromatography, and the students were able to make models of molecules and learn about the structure of an atom. The Year 11 Biology students also assisted students with the microscopes on display. Students were able to view cells under the microscope. They also helped to explain parts of the anatomical models. All students were challenged to build a human skeleton in the shortest possible time using our bone outlines. The fastest was completed in 30 seconds. The paper plane challenge was also successfully completed by the Year 9 students as they managed to fly their planes a distance greater than 6 metres. Overall, the fair highlighted some of the good work and learning that is happening in Science.

Kindy Red Counting

Kindy Red worked on their counting skills with a fun fine motor activity of threading the right number of beads on a pipe cleaner.

Christmas in July

It's Christmas in July in B204. Students and teachers are very excited about the new equipment for use now in Food Technology and Hospitality. We are extremely grateful for the support that Sr Margaret has shown to the TAS & VET department which will go towards enriching the educational experience if the MCHF students.

Year 6 Science PBL Showcase

The Year 6 students were really excited to share and showcase their knowledge, research, and prototypes that pushed them to think outside the box at the 2024 Science PBL showcase on Wednesday the 24th of July.

Students were required to make their planet 'habitable,' which they achieved through collaboration with peers and guidance from their teachers, who kept track of their progress.

Thank you to all the Year 6 teachers for helping make this day come together!

Student Reflections:

Mary Elias (4 Amber): When we visited the Science showcase today, I felt like it was an extraordinary experience. It was full of colour, and everyone was very welcoming. I learned a lot about the planet Jupiter, including the fun fact that it has 95 moons! It looked like Year 6 put a lot of effort into their projects. There were many different ideas using Lego and Minecraft, which I liked a lot.

Matthew Abi-Khatter (6 Emerald): Over the weeks of preparing our space Project-Based Science Learning task, I learned to work in groups and discovered a lot about different planets. This task challenged me to push my limits by collaborating on multiple tasks. As a group, we overcame the challenge of making our planet habitable by creating a prototype that helps humans live a healthy life, including eating and sleeping, on Kepler 452b. It was rewarding to teach other students about this planet and share what we came up with.

Secondary Semester 1 Awards

On Friday 26th July, our Secondary staff and students came together to celebrate the student achievements in Semester 1, recognizing student excellence in  and beyond the classroom.

Our theme this year, Journey of Growth, links closely with our College Mission where the focus is on students to identify areas for growth and go on a journey with the support of teachers, peers and parents to develop themselves and realize their potential. This enables students to achieve the vision for the College where students are challenged to grow in faith, strive for excellence and transform the future.

There were five main categories of awards presented to students:

  1. Academic Achievement Award: In recognition of student who have demonstrated excellence in a course.
  2. GRIT Award: in recognition of students who demonstrate GROWTH, RESILIENCE, INITIATIVE and TENACITY in their learning to achieve their best.
  3. Maronite Values Award: In recognition of students who, through their daily interactions with others, display and give personal witness to the Maronite Catholic ethos, values, beliefs and practices of our College.
  4. Community Service Award: In recognition of students who show great pride and service to the College community.
  5. GEM Awards: In recognition of students who demonstrate GRATITUDE, EMPATHY, and MINDFULNESS in their daily interactions and actions with other.

In addition to these awards, we presented other special awards including Bronze, Silver, and Executive Principal Merits, participation at the Our Lady of Lebanon Co-Cathedral ANZAC Ceremony, Providence Program, Duke of Edinburgh, Day of AI, and Public Speaking Showcase.  We will also be presenting certificates and show bags to our friends from China who are visiting this week on a short stay program.

We congratulate all the students who received an award and we thank the many parents who attended. The assembly was live streamed and can be viewed on our YouTube channel if you had missed it.

HSIE YEAR 8

As part of the Stage 4 History curriculum, Year 8 students have been learning about the nature of society in medieval Europe. Students were tasked with an assessment to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through a creative medium. They designed engaging board-games aimed at educating students about the role of individuals and groups in medieval Europe. Students had an opportunity to share, display and play the boardgames with their peers. The HSIE department commend all students on their amazing effort and application.

DEAR Program with 2 Jade

Students love our afternoons when we “Drop everything and read (DEAR).” They engaged in peer teaching and giving feedback. The DEAR program has been an essential part of improving literacy and enhancing creativity and imagination.

Year 7 Engineering Projects

Today was race day for our year 7 engineers. Over the last 10 weeks in Technology, students have been learning about the engineering principles and the fundamentals of aerodynamics through the design and make of a Co2 powered dragster. It was the ultimate speed test!

Bernina in Textiles

A special training session on our school's new embroidery machine in Textiles was held with our senior students and TAS teachers. It was an insightful afternoon that sparked some creativity that can be used in upcoming projects. We thank Bree from Bernina for sharing her expertise in this area!!

Our End of Term 2 Primary Assembly was a lively celebration of our students' achievements. Along with recognising academic excellence, we enjoyed a fantastic extracurricular performance by our MCHF dance group. A big thank you to our dedicated teachers, staff, and students for their hard work and enthusiasm. We’re excited for another term of learning and growth!

Peer Teaching in Geography

The Year 12 Geography class volunteered their time to assist Year 10 students with skills in preparation for their upcoming exams. Through peer teaching, the senior students imparted essential skills, drawing from their own academic experiences. Their mentorship not only strengthened the Year 10 students' understanding but also fostered a collaborative learning environment.

We thank the Year 12 Geography students for taking part in this initiative!
