Gospel Reflection

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Summary

In this passage, Jesus reminds us that we all matter and that what we do makes a difference. Being “salt” means adding goodness, kindness and care to the world around us. Being “light” means letting our actions show love, hope and respect so others can see what a good life looks like. We don’t do this to show off — we do it because that’s who we are called to be.

Scripture – Matthew 5:13–16

Jesus said to his followers: “You are the salt of the earth. If salt loses its taste, it’s no longer useful. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. People don’t light a lamp and hide it. They put it where it can shine for everyone. In the same way, let your light shine so others can see the good you do and give thanks to God.”

Reflection

Jesus isn’t asking us to be perfect or loud or impressive. He’s asking us to be real. To be salt and light in ordinary moments — in how we speak, how we treat people, and how we respond when things are hard.

At school, being salt might look like encouraging someone who is struggling, being fair, or helping to keep our classroom calm and safe. Being light might look like choosing kindness when it’s easier to be unkind, standing up for someone, or trying again even when learning feels hard.

We don’t shine by being better than others. We shine by choosing love, again and again, in small ways that matter.

Reflection Questions

  • Where do I already bring kindness or calm to others?
  • When is it hardest for me to be “salt” or “light”?
  • How can my words or actions help someone feel safe, included or encouraged today?
  • What is one small way I can let my light shine this week?

Prayer

Loving God, Thank you for reminding us that we matter and that our choices make a difference. Help us to be salt and light in simple, everyday ways — in our classrooms, on the playground, at home and with each other.

When we feel tired or frustrated, help us choose kindness. When we feel unsure, help us choose courage. When we forget our worth, remind us that we are already enough.

Help our words and actions reflect your love, so others may feel safe, valued and hopeful.

Amen.
