The Importance of Reading at Home
At our school, we believe that reading is one of the most important skills a child can develop. Strong reading skills support learning across all subjects and help build confidence, imagination and a lifelong love of learning.
One of the best ways to support your child’s reading development is by making reading a regular and enjoyable part of daily life at home. This might include sharing a bedtime story, taking turns reading aloud, talking about characters and events, or letting your child choose books that match their interests. When reading is fun and relaxed, children are far more likely to stay engaged and motivated.
We strongly encourage families to record daily reading at home.
Kindergarten - For Kindergarten students, the focus is on making reading fun and enjoyable, such as sharing stories as part of a bedtime routine. Formal reading and recording will begin in Term 2.
Year 1: Parents and carers are asked to record reading in the ‘My Home Reading’ Log. Students, if able, may like to record with support. Parents and carers are asked to check and sign. This will begin in the coming weeks.
Years 2 to 6: Students should record their own reading in their School Diary, with parents and carers checking and signing to acknowledge it.
Regularly recording reading helps build responsibility, reinforces routines and allows teachers to support each child’s progress more effectively.
Thank you for your continued support in helping your child develop a positive relationship with reading. Together, we can nurture confident and capable readers.
