Reading Fluency in Middle M and Middle T

This term, a major focus for us has been strengthening our reading fluency. Two or three times each week, we sit beside our reading partner and read a familiar passage aloud. We read for one minute, then swap, continuing this routine for six minutes.

We are working on reading with expression, attention to punctuation, and steady pacing so our reading sounds smooth and makes meaning clearer. It has been a positive and confidence‑building routine for us.

We also sometimes take the passage home to practise, even for a few minutes.

Writing in Middle M and Middle T

In Writing, students have been developing their descriptive skills by using their senses to explore characters and settings. This work is helping them prepare for narrative writing. 

Student Samples ~ Description of Characters: 

George is a boy wearing a blue striped shirt, with orange buttons. He has green eyes and bright red shorts. George is shy, he feels hurt and embarrassed. George loves to read, but has very bad handwriting. Sometimes he feels a little bit silly at schoolwork.

Beth has long hair. She only has two teeth and very, very long legs. She is very happy, but sometimes she is mean and a little bit evil.

Beth always tries her hardest in every subject at school. Even though she is shy, she is kind, especially to her best friend George. They love to play sports together, and share their interesting ideas on their walk to school.

Student Samples ~ Description of Settings: 

Beth lives in a white brick, single‑storey house with a red tiled roof. It has a small, neat garden with grass and trees. Crickets can be heard at night, even when the dog next door is barking. The stained‑glass windows stand out when you walk by.

Beth and George’s school is pleasant in the summertime. The sun shines brightly as students run around outside, near the tall trees that rustle in the wind. The petals on the flowers can be seen moving, and their perfume gives a clean, pleasant smell as the children fly past. You can even taste the sweetness coming from the students’ lunchboxes.
