CAREERS

SUPPORTING STUDENTS TO EXPLORE THEIR FUTURE PATHWAYS

When we entered Semester 2 at St Joseph’s College, our focus remained on ensuring students feel confident, supported and excited in planning their next steps. Whether their future lies in university, TAFE, apprenticeships, traineeships, or employment, our Careers Team is here to help. Throughout the semester, we will continue to guide students through their options, helping them make informed choices and transition smoothly into VCE or life after secondary school.

In preparation for the Senior Pathways Evening held in Week 1 of Term 3, Year 10 students participated in an interactive presentation led by Careers Practitioner Fiona Dimasi. The session introduced students to the differences between the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), the Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM), and Vocational Education and Training (VET). Students then completed a practical subject selection activity designed to help them consider how their senior studies with their interests, strengths and future aspirations.

Our Work Experience Program and the Structured Workplace Learning Program continue to provide students with invaluable opportunities to connect with professionals across a diverse range of industries, including trades, environmental conservation, radiography, allied health, education, retail and business services. We are incredibly grateful to the local businesses and organisations that generously welcome and support our students. These placements allow students to experience the realities of the workplace, develop professional skills, seek advice from industry experts, and gain a deeper understanding of potential career paths. Often, these experiences provide students with greater clarity, confidence and renewed motivation as they work towards their future goals.

This term, students also had the opportunity to hear from representatives of Lincoln College Adelaide and Adelaide University, who shared valuable information about accommodation, university life and study opportunities in South Australia. Year 12 students officially commenced their post-school application process in August by attending the Tertiary Information Service Roadshow and VTAC Information Session. These were complemented by admission centre presentations organised by the College for students and their families, helping them navigate tertiary applications with greater confidence and understanding.

A highlight of the term so far was the Careers at MBPH Excursion, where students visited Mildura Base Public Hospital to explore the wide range of careers available within the healthcare sector. Throughout the day, students gained valuable insights into midwifery, mental health and general nursing, while also learning about the many essential roles that contribute to the successful operation of a modern hospital.

Students were also introduced to the MBPH Careers Ecosystem Tool by Stefanie Deskovic, Workplace Trainer & Career Advisor – Organisational Development at Mildura Base Public Hospital. This innovative interactive resource showcases the many interconnected careers within the hospital environment and highlights the broad range of pathways available in healthcare. It is an outstanding resource for students considering a future in the health industry.

To keep families informed and connected with the opportunities available to our students, our Careers Newsletter is distributed monthly to students in Years 10 to 12 and is also available to the wider College community through the College Website and St Joseph’s College Careers website.

We are proud to partner with students and families as they explore possibilities, build confidence, and make informed decisions about their futures. Through strong connections with industry, tertiary providers, and the wider community, we strive to ensure every student has the opportunity to discover what is possible, recognise their strengths and pursue a pathway that is right for them.
