Reading:
In Reading, the students have been focusing on the theme of ‘noticing and appreciating’. Through this theme, the students have explored a range of texts such as Enemy Pie - By Derek Munson and What Happened to You- By James Catchpole and Karen George. The students continued to engage with the language features the authors use, strengthen their understanding of complex sentences and connective words, explore storylines and how authors use these to engage the reader and build literal and inferred meaning of the texts by practising their ability to draw inferences.
Writing:
In Writing, students have been working hard on writing Information Reports. They began by learning how to choose a sub-topic and brainstorm facts, then grouped their ideas under clear headings to plan their writing. Using planners, they researched and collected information in their own words and sorted their notes into the right sections. From there, students drafted their reports and focused on editing and publishing to share their finished work. This learning has helped them become more organised writers and confident researchers.
Maths:
In Maths, students have been practising subtraction with regrouping and using different strategies to solve subtraction problems. They are learning to explain their thinking and share strategies with their peers. Students have also been exploring fractions, including understanding improper fractions and mixed numbers, explaining what they are, and converting between the two. They are representing fractions on a number line by dividing it into equal parts, placing fractions correctly, and explaining their reasoning. Throughout these lessons, students are building confidence with numbers, developing problem-solving skills, and becoming more independent mathematicians.
The students have also been exploring tessellations by observing them in their surroundings, such as in the classroom and the school yard, and by constructing their own tessellating patterns.
They have also been developing their skills in data and statistics through a fun investigation of the longest throw. Students collected data, recorded it using tallies and then represented their results in a graph.
Inquiry:
In Inquiry this month, the students have been working through their Inquiry Project: How can we support healthy eating and healthy movement at home, at school and in the community?
They have created a variety of projects, slide shows, Fitness Tracking Apps, speeches, posters, letters to the canteen staff to suggest varying the menu and presentations about improving the school’s playgrounds to improve body health.
The students have invested a lot of time in growing their understanding of how to improve their health through eating more fruits, vegetables and unprocessed food, as well as increasing their movement at home.
The students have actively participated in and enjoyed this unit of work and have found the information rather valuable and useful.
