Year Six
Spotlight on Learning
Bethlehem Community
Dear Families,
Welcome back to school for Term 4. We are straight back into learning this week as we enjoy our last term with your Year 6 student/s, it is always a busy term with transitions and lots of events occurring.

As the students will need to be very independent next year, routines such as ensuring they bring their school hat, having fruit or vegetables for our mid learning break in the morning, having enough food and a water bottle are important to be well established and organised by the students themselves. For Parents, checking Pam (or Simon everywhere) is essential for ensuring your students can go on upcoming school activities, by giving permission, and keeping up to date with what is going on.
On Wednesday Alabeka and Hermione were part of the representation of STAPS students to attend the Division Athletics carnival. Hermione raced brilliantly to be 2nd in the 200m race. Alabeka flew over the hurdles to take first place before running a personal best to win the 100m sprint. Well done to both of you, we are very proud of your efforts.

Religious Education Focus:
This week the students have undertaken a preassessment to find out their understanding of Mission Month, The Kingdom of God and Catholic Social Teaching Principles. Next week students will expand on their knowledge of Mission Month and its link to the Kingdom of God.
English Focus:

This week the students began reading a new text called 'Can You See Me?' The book's main character Tally narrates her journey into Secondary School and the difficulties she has navigating her new environment. Tally's autism means that sometimes things annoy her even though she wishes they didn't (like her new school shirt and shoes. We will continue to read this text throughout the term.
Next week, the students will explore vocabulary from the text, while also building their skills in persuasive writing. Students will be analysing Persuasive letters, while building their arguments to create their own persuasive points. Students are revising reading and making 'st, sist & stin' based words - for example subsisted, persistence, while learning vocabulary & meaning of 'trib' based words such as contribution, attribute, distribute.
Mathematics Focus:
Students are studying Fractions, Decimals and Percentages for the next four weeks. This week the students have been learning to calculate percentages of 50%, 25% and 10%. Next week we will be expanding this knowledge to calculate discounts of 50%, 25% and 10% in real life scenarios such as shopping. To be successful the students will be supported to divide by 10 and then multiply by whole numbers, use mental strategies to calculate the total cost of an item after a discount and use an algorithm to calculate the total cost of an item after a discount.
Integrated Studies Focus:
This term's topic is 'Taking Charge of my health'. Over this week and next the students are learning and finding examples of what it means to 'be healthy' and identifying the difference between mental health, physical health, social health and emotional health. Then they will look at ads and messages about health and decide if they are helpful or not.
SEL Focus:
This week the students undertook a preassessment in 'Help Seeking'. As we progress through the unit, these skills will help set them up for their transition to secondary school. In particular students will have confidence to know what problems they can solve, how our friends can help us with certain problems and knowing when to seek adult or services to help with particular issues. The importance of belonging and connection to our communities will be important.
Auslan Learning Focus:
This week the students have been advancing their learning about animal signs. Moving on from cats, dogs and birds to deer, giraffe and tiger signs for example. Next week the students will be focusing on animals that live in the sea.

Reminder:
Smart watches & Mobile Phones need to be handed in to your student's teacher for safe keeping throughout the school day.
