Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Bethany Families,

Welcome back to Term 4! It’s wonderful to see everyone return refreshed and ready for another great term of learning. The start of Term 4 can feel a little challenging as we adjust to daylight saving time, but students have settled back in beautifully.

On Wednesday, STAPS students attended the Division Athletics Carnival with incredible pride and sportsmanship. Allegra achieved an impressive 3rd place in the 1500m race. The team events were equally exciting, with our relay teams showing great determination and teamwork. Salome and Allegra were part of the relay team and powered their way to a 3rd place finish.

Religious Education Focus: Next week, our Year 5 students will explore the Catholic Social Teaching principles of Preferential Action for the Poor and Human Dignity. They will create short videos explaining how these principles are inspired by Scripture and how it calls Catholics to respect and value every person. Through this activity, students will make connections between the teachings of the Church and living out love and care for others in their daily lives.

English Focus: We have begun reading the novel The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. Students are exploring new vocabulary and deepening their comprehension by responding to questions that help them summarise each chapter. In writing, students are learning about the structure and language features of persuasive letters. They will use the knowledge gained from a non-fiction text about polar bears to construct their own persuasive letters.

Mathematics Focus:

Next week in Mathematics, students will be learning to convert between halves, quarters, and percentages. They will explore how fractions, decimals, and percentages are connected. Students will identify missing percentages, place them on a number line, and order fractions, decimals, and percentages from smallest to largest. They will also apply their understanding to real-life situations as they build confidence in converting between these forms.

Integrated Studies Focus:

This week, students learned about the main food groups — protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. They explored healthy and less healthy food choices and demonstrated their understanding of a balanced diet by designing their own healthy lunchbox.

Next week, students will be learning about the roles of the digestive, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, musculoskeletal, and immune systems. They will explore how these systems work together to keep the body functioning and identify the differences between a healthy body system and an unhealthy one.

SEL Focus: Under the theme Everyone Belongs: Growing Connections, students will explore what belonging means to them. They will identify similarities and differences among people and groups, and discuss ways to include others to help everyone feel they belong. Students will also learn how building positive connections with others can help prevent bullying and reflect on the different connections they have in their own lives.

Auslan Learning Focus: Students will be learning that constructed action involves enacting different characters by changing body language, eye gaze, and head orientation. These three important elements help to show different characters by differentiating how each behaves and where they are looking in relation to others.
