Topic 4: Importance of reviewing learning
Last time we shared our knowledge of Cognitive Load Theory which bridges nicely into our today’s topic of ‘Review(復習)’.
Review consolidates students’ understanding and develops their fluency in understanding. It also ensures that students have the prerequisite skills for the day’s lesson. We know that teaching something once does not guarantee learning has happened. Learning is a change in long term memory, so students need the opportunity to retrieve and use learnt content and skills multiple times before learning happens.
The Forgetting Curve below illustrates that the drop in what is remembered after initial learning is considerable and steep. Retrieval practice helps combat this natural forgetting process!
What does it look like in the classroom?
In every lesson, teachers take time to access students’ prior knowledge (what they already know/what they have learnt in the previous lesson).
This year, English teachers have worked to incorporate a structured Daily Review into our Literacy lessons. Daily Review occurs at the beginning of lessons. It can include;
- Practicing a particular spelling pattern or rule
- Reviewing grammar
- Revisiting key vocabulary from a text
Students are actively engaged in Daily Review by using their mini whiteboards. Teachers are able to check for understanding and provide immediate and point of need feedback to individuals or the class.
