Grade 3/4 News

Loving learning every day with Mrs Jacobs and Miss Mawby!

We have started our new mentor text Night Walk. We have looked at the language the author uses to hold our attention and build suspense, as well as the language they use to build an image in reader's minds. We used the book as an inspiration for creating our own 'hook' (the way in which we get our reader to want to keep reading) using sentence stems, complex sentences, and subordinate conjunctions. Here are some examples of our fabulous hooks:

Mason

When the sun dropped behind the trees, the full moon swept through the sky. Since the humans drift off to sleep, the animals have no humans to distract them, so they can hunt. But listen! A popping sound is coming from the tent. Look! The zipper is creeping down ... As the animals run to hide, they saw it was just Casper. As Casper set off on his last adventure, the sand flowed behind him.

When the sun slowly fades away from the sky, the moon gracefully rises up and the birds start chirping. Since the humans have dreadfully closed their eyelids and fallen asleep, the night animals have started to feast on their food. But listen! A crackling sounds is coming from within the tent. Something was unzipping the tent ... As the animals creeped out of their homes, they were so curious about what it could be, but it was just Casper. As Casper set off on his last adventure, and he took his first steps, an owl swooped from the sky and a nice breeze brushed through his hair.

Tyler

When the sun fades away, the moon sparkles with light. Since the humans are snoring, the night time animals are scattering. But listen! A scrambling noise is rumbling inside of the tent. The bush was curious. As the animals quickly scrambled to their burrows, they relaxed. It was only Casper on his night walk.

In Maths, we have been exploring addition and subtraction, the relationship between the two, and how we can use them to build fact families. We have been having lots of fun using MABs to build and rename numbers, and then using renaming to solve addition and subtraction problems. We have also started looking at worded problems, and the strategies we can use to help us solve them.

In Integrated Studies we explored the Australian Guide for Healthy Eating, and the things we need to eat each day to ensure that we are strong and healthy. We planned our own healthy meals, and made sure that we had something from each section of the guide.
