Dear Parents
Yesterday I informed my staff and school council that I would be taking long service leave for terms three and four this year and will consider my options after that. I have also informed my line manager at the Department of Education. The regional office will now undertake a process to appoint an Acting Principal for this period, and we will inform you of the outcome as soon as it is available.
We will keep you informed.
A lot has happened in the life of the school since our last newsletter:
Education Support Recognition Day
Yesterday was ES recognition day and we took the opportunity to celebrate the work of our ES team at a special assembly in the afternoon. The ES team are a big part of the work that happens in any school, and the commitment of this group of people to the children of WVPS is very much appreciated. Their roles include supporting students in class, running intervention programs, working in the library, working with Wynston, answering the phone in the front office, attending to sick children, undertaking maintenance in the yard. The list is endless! Me personally, a big thanks to the work of this group of people. You are very much appreciated.
Mothers’ Day
Our students have had the opportunity to shop for something for mum or other significant adult at the Mothers’ Day stall as organised by our Parents and Friends Group: a huge thank you to this group for the effort they went to provide this service to our school community. We trust that the mums enjoyed the treasures purchased for them by students and had a fabulous day last Sunday. Our Foundation Class also hosted a special Mothers’ Day afternoon. There were lots of happy smiles across this group as our children shared some of their schooling experience with a special adult. We have a few photos later in the newsletter around this.
Crazy Hair Day
A recent initiative of our Junior School Council was crazy hair day, which was done as a fundraiser for the Cancer Council. A highlight of this was one of our teachers, Em, getting all their hair cut off at assembly. We are pleased to report that over $3,000 was raised to support this worthy cause inclusive of nearly $2,000 from the student population. A big thank you and well done to Em, JSC and the wider school community. There is a photographic representation of this event in upcoming pages.
Year six camp
A group of tired campers (staff included!) returned to school on Wednesday afternoon after spending three days at Anglesea engaging in lots of fun outdoor and team building activities. Some of our students even tried their hand at surfing! School camp is a fabulous opportunity for children to build resilience away from the security of home, and also create stronger (and new) bonds among their friendship group. Our teachers report that the student’s behaviour was fabulous and they were excellent representations of the WVPS community. Well done grade six! There are some photos later in the newsletter under the School News tab.
King's Birthday holiday and end of term
A reminder that Monday, June 10 is a public holiday for the King's Birthday and school is closed for the day. Some advance notice: the last day of term is Friday, June 28. School will finish at 2.30pm on this day following a whole of school assembly.
School photos and NAPLAN
These are now being processed and will be due back in school in early term three (NAPLAN reports) whilst school photos are expected mid-term three.
Foundation enrolments – 2025
Enrolments for the upcoming school year have now commenced. We know it seems early, but the time will pass by really quickly. Early notification of numbers also assists us to plan our staffing and physical resources. If you have, or know of, a Foundation student due to start school in 2025 please call into the office and collect an enrolment pack. Even if you returned the paperwork tomorrow you wouldn’t be the first to enrol for next year. We already have quite a number. A reminder that we will need to sight and copy your child’s birth certificate or passport, along with several documents that give us proof of your residential address.
School Council
The next meeting of our school council was last night. School council considers policy, upcoming excursions and financial statements as they relate to the school, as well as hearing from various subcommittees. School Council is an open meeting and all are welcome but please note that visitors have no speaking rights other than at the invitation of the president.
Have a fabulous upcoming weekend everyone.
Kind regards
Sue Seneviratne
