Justice Matters Camp

Four students from St Augustine's College joined with 61 other students from Sandhurst schools for the 2024 Justice Matters Camp held in Beechworth.  The program was brimming with engaging activities, fostering fellowship and sparking new connections among participants.

Camp participants delved into a range of social justice issues, spanning climate change, poverty, asylum seekers and refugees, environmental conservation, indigenous culture, overseas aid and development. Through a plethora of interactive mediums including prayer, dialogue, storytelling, journaling enables participants to passionately voice their concerns and perspectives.

The program featured thematic workshops, allowing participants to explore areas of interest in depth, culminating in an enlightening Panel where ideas were exchanged and insights shared. Adding a touch of excitement, an enthralling Amazing Race around Beechworth provided a lively diversion during ‘free time’.

A screening of the film "The Old Oak" on Thursday evening prompted reflections on themes of migration, racism and human dignity.

On the final day, school groups gathered to craft action plans, starting with pressing issues and progressing through awareness-building, solidarity efforts, fundraising, and tangible steps towards effecting change—a journey towards justice restoration. The culmination of the program saw each school presenting their action plan, leaving Camp organisers with no doubt that participants were inspired and empowered to enact positive change in their local communities. A student-led liturgy marked the conclusion, urging everyone to carry forth the torch of justice with renewed passion.

“I enjoyed making new friends and challenging my perception of the world through the eyes of people living in third world countries. The key learning that I took away from the camp was the carbon footprint one makes from buying international fruits for simple meals. As the representatives of our school our group is working towards organising a nature walk to promote sustainable transport options and appreciating the natural world. We hope that Fr Uday and some of our local politicians will be available to join us!” Guneet, Year 10

“At the Justice Matters Camp I made new friends, learned about social justice issues, and most importantly, had fun! On the final day, me and my school mates were tasked with coming up with a plan to help raise awareness when we go back to school. We decided to arrange a nature walk and provide more sustainability tips in the school newsletter and on SIMON. This camp was a rewarding and enjoyable experience and I hope to return next year!” Ekatarina, Year 9

"During the Justice Matters Camp we learnt about community, renewable energy, the pros and cons of using plastic and how to spread awareness. We got to meet and interact with other kids from other schools and we made plenty of friends. During the last day we talked about ways to spread awareness in our school." Noreen, Year 9
