Reading

CURRICULUM FOCUS

As part of our reading block this week we will be continuing on with our understanding of ‘retelling’ a fiction text.

VOCABULARY

Retell: identifying the most important parts in a story. When we look at a fiction retell, we think about who the characters are (people/animals/made up creatures), the setting (where the story happens), the problem (what goes wrong in the story) and the solution (how the problem was solved/fixed).

Fiction: a made-up story for example: The Three Little Pigs, Dr Seuss, Pig the Pug etc.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

With your child, discuss what the term ‘retell’ means.

Using either a picture story book you have at home, one of your child’s library books from school or a dot book from their blue satchel read the book together (you may need to read the book to your child which is okay!).

After reading the book ask your child the following questions to identify the most important parts within the book you just read together.

Who were the characters? (people/animals/made up creatures)

What was the setting? (where the story happens)

What was the problem in the story? (what goes wrong in the story)

How was the problem solved/fixed? (how the problem was solved/fixed)
