Learning in Action

Literacy

Persuasives? NO get them out of here! In Grade 6 we started a new writing piece. I’m sure you’re all on the edge of your seats wondering, what is this writing piece? Well, It’s an information report on… drumroll please… Olympians. Specifically, athletes competing in the 2024 Olympics. We’ve learnt about paraphrasing so that we can write our information reports easily. On a reading note, the Grade 6 students have been doing the DAL test. DAL stands for Digital Assessment Library (aka a reading test). Well, writing this was fun but I've got to go work on my information report.

Preview for Learning:

Students will continue to work on their information reports. Students will continue to learn the skills of summarising and paraphrasing to apply these skills when researching.  Students will continue to include additional information ready to complete their final draft.

Maths

Starting this week we have been learning about volume, capacity and mass. We have also been looking at the formula for finding out the volume of a rectangular container and more efficient ways to find the answer. We found out that in order to find out the volume we must times the length, by width by the height to find the answer.

In addition to that, our work on division continues, as well as a couple of assessments to see how we are going.

Preview for Learning

With regard to volume, capacity and mass, students will soon commence an investigation where they will transform 2D shapes into 3D shapes whilst learning about the associated units of measurement. Students will also commence learning about Order of Operations.

Inquiry

The Grade 6 students were eagerly awaiting this week's inquiry project session. The senior teachers have been showing us their slides, and this week we looked at Tibet for inspiration. They showed us their page about traditional and cultural clothing. We then got cracking on our own slides, collaborating with our groups to learn all about our country’s traditional clothing. We can’t wait to share our slideshows with everyone on the celebration morning.

We also look forward to hearing about the cultures and backgrounds of some of the students in Grade 6.

Wellbeing

We have been chatting in the Grade 6 classes a lot of 'Help Seeking' recently. There is a stigma that is attached to "dobbing" or "snitching", but the reality is, those terms hinder a child's ability to seek the support they need when they are challenged. Our sessions not only discuss strategies, but also place them in scenarios to understand what can be done. Seeking help and speaking to someone is very healthy and we want students to know that they will be supported when they seek support from someone they trust.

In addition, we have recently put up some displays to emphasize 'Stop, Think, Do'. This is a common slogan we use with students to remind them of stopping and thinking prior to acting in a challenging situation. We encourage this saying to be used at home as w

Sport

Following some hotly contested semi-finals during the week, two Grade 6 teams will be going head-to-head in the LNL (Lysterfield Netball League) Grand Final. They will be challenged against their friends. Congratulations to the two teams, coached by Mr Wight and Miss McElroy/Miss Emonson, that have made it through.

The Senior School have also been to the first day of Winter Round Robin where they played against all different schools. The second day is upon us, and we are all keen to hear the results. Good luck to all teams and we are sure you will represent the school with pride.

STEM Leaders

At Lysterfield Primary School, we promote high expectations for all our students, and want to encourage our students to challenge themselves and tackle new and interesting opportunities. In light of this, we are encouraging interested students in Grades 3-6 to participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition this year.

The Australian Mathematics Competition, run by the Australian Maths Trust, is Australia’s longest running, largest and most well-known maths competition for school students. It is made up of 30 unique problems designed to challenge and extend students’ problem solving skills.

Students have 60 minutes to complete the competition which will occur at school sometime between Tuesday 6th - 8th August (exact date and time TBC).

Every student who participates will receive recognition and an award at their level of achievement. The levels are:

  • Participation
  • Proficiency
  • Credit
  • Distinction
  • High Distinction

The competition will cost $8.50 per student.

For more information about the competition, watch this video from AMT, check out their website, or contact Zahra Harvey (zahra.harvey@education.vic.gov.au).

If you are interested in your child participating in the Australian Mathematics Competition this year, please add their names to the form below by Friday 31st May:
