Prep News

Important Reminders!

All important dates and events are on our Compass Calendar, please check the calendar regularly to stay up to date!

  • Library books are now DUE on a TUESDAY. This will assist in the returns process.
  • Please continue to use your child's ‘School Tools’ daily to practise their individual goal.
  • Students are required to bring their take-home bags to school daily.
  • Every Tuesday, prep students have PMP. On this day, we ask for the girls not to wear tights as it is not safe to participate in these. It would also be great if you could get your child to practise taking off and putting on their socks and shoes so they can do this independently and efficiently.
  • Take-home reading - students will receive a new take-home book every Monday. Students need to practise their reading daily. Below is a suggested structure
Monday - Focus on decoding (sounding out words)
Tuesday - Focus on fluency (reading smoothly)
Wednesday - Focus on comprehension. If you would like further challenges, you can extend your child by having them write about the pictures.
    Thursday - Library book comprehension
Friday - Letter sounds/words in school tools

Education Week Celebration

Thank you to all the families who came to our Education week open afternoon. The Preps loved having their families at school and enjoyed showing you what they have been learning about in Maths.

Learning in Action

Literacy:Students have continued to work on their reading fluency by reading a simple book focusing on pointing under the words and using accuracy strategies when encountering unknown words. Students were also exposed to ‘s’ blends (st, sp, sn) to help them decode words. The heart words, ‘she, his, and has’ were introduced to help students learn them off by heart. In Writing, students have verbally stated compound sentences, which are two simple sentences joined together. For example, The koala is cute and it has two fluffy ears. Students continued to work through the writing process ‘talk, draw, label, and write’ to communicate their ideas.

Preview - Next fortnight we will introduce new letter sounds and revise compound sentences.

Maths: Over the past fortnight, students have continued learning about addition. Students have learnt about ‘friends of 5’ and have been able to identify what two numbers make five. Students have been continuing to work on their individual Maths goals, including count all, count on, friends of five/ten, and counting on from the bigger number.

This fortnight, we have started a new applied unit focusing on measurement. Students have learnt about length, and found objects in the classroom that are the same length, longer or shorter.

Preview- Next fortnight we will introduce subtraction and continue learning about measurement.

Inquiry:Students have been learning about Australia’s First Nations people. We have been discussing the importance of history, our country, and reconciliation. In pairs, students created a poster for Reconciliation Week that showed the importance of saying sorry and being thankful for our land.

Preview - Students will continue to expand their knowledge of communities and have a community guest speaker day.

Wellbeing:We have been learning about the four friendship facts and what’s normal in friendships. These 4 Friendship Facts are the foundation of a healthy, respectful friendship and apply to relationships throughout life.

Preview- Next fortnight we will continue our Respectful Relationships program and learn about managing emotions.

Afrobeat Incursion

Last week the Preps enjoyed a fun and energised session, where they learnt the art of working together without words, building dynamic sounds, and polyrhythmic compositions traditional to African Music. Students loved hitting the drums and it brought a big smile to their faces!
