Reimagine: Our Year of Innovation and Growth
As we moved into our second decade of SMCM’s establishment, the theme that was chosen this year was 'Reimagine'. Following the celebration of our school's ten-year anniversary last year, we embraced this theme to inspire creativity, innovation, and new possibilities for our community. We have truly 'reimagined' in numerous ways, from our professional learning initiatives and collaborative projects to the enriching excursions, incursions, and camp experiences that have broadened our students' horizons. This year has been filled with transformative experiences that have shaped not just our students, but our entire school community.
2024 Highlights
Our dedicated teachers have embarked on many professional learning initiatives, designed to enhance student learning outcomes. We began and embraced our Science of Learning journey with the support of the SOLAR Lab Research Project, and partnering with La Trobe University and the Australian Education Research Organisation. This collaboration supported our staff and students in implementing evidence-based approaches to guide our teaching and learning for the greatest student impact. These efforts, coupled with our focus on daily reviews in English and Maths, and the introduction of explicit direct instruction models, have significantly enriched our students’ educational experience.
The year was also filled with exciting excursions and incursions that extended learning beyond the classroom walls. Our students engaged in a range of excursions such as the MCG and Skydeck tour, the Shrine of Remembrance, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, and they also enjoyed a variety of captivating incursions and performances. These experiences were thoughtfully crafted to ignite curiosity and deepen understanding, providing our students with unique opportunities to engage with the world around them.
Our camps were a highlight, offering students valuable life experiences and unforgettable memories. Year 4 had a fantastic time at Lady Northcote, Year 5 enjoyed the seaside adventures of Don Bosco Camp, and Year 6 experienced the great outdoors at Camp Rumbug. These camps not only fostered teamwork and resilience but also provided a wonderful setting for students to grow in confidence and independence.
As a Catholic parish primary school, our faith journey remains at the heart of all we do. This year, we proudly participated in St Vincent de Paul appeals, celebrated masses and liturgies, and witnessed the joy of sacramental celebrations for our Year 3, 4, and 6 students. These events have strengthened our community's spiritual foundation and reinforced our commitment to living out the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Our school community has also come together for various celebrations and events. From the vibrant Harmony Day and the feast day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop to the heartwarming Celebration of Learning and Christmas Carols, each event has been a testament to our school's spirit of unity and joy. We are eagerly preparing for the 2025 School Fete in Term 1, which promises to be an exciting start to the new year.
As we reflect on the year gone by, we are filled with gratitude for the unwavering support of our families and the dedication of our staff. SMCM continues to strive for excellence not only in academic outcomes but also in providing enriching life experiences and strengthening our children's connection with God. Inspired by the life and virtues of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, we look forward to a future brimming with hope and promise.
Wishing all our SMCM families a restful break filled with joy, love, and blessings. See you in the new year!
Warm regards,
