COLLEGE NEWS

TERM 3 ASSEMBLY

On 17 October, the college recognised excellence during Term 3. We began by congratulating those who received Virtue Conquers badges and the Principal’s Awards. Students who had achieved success in sport then received special medals. Lastly, we celebrated our final ‘Unsung Hero’ for the year, a unique award for which students nominate their peers in special recognition of excellence that may not fall within the categories of the Catherine McAuley Excellence Awards.

Following the presentations, students spoke about the Year 11 Snow Camp, Year 7 and Year 9 Camps, and Australian Business Week.

In the second half of the Assembly, Fr Matt Thomas held a Liturgy for the Class of 2024.

SSVS JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL

On Wednesday 18 September, the college competed in the SSVS junior girls basketball competition. For a group of girls who had never played as a team, we were fantastic!

Straight off the line, we faced Merbein P–10 College, always a competitive school to play against. The first half separated our teams by a mere point. Ahead by one, and the nervousness of the initial start out of the way, the girls dug deep. Alexis Paterson, with her sharp eye, sunk three vital three-pointers in a row to push us ahead. This boost of confidence allowed our girls to come away with a great win.

Our second and third games against Coomealla High School and Henderson College allowed our girls to hone their skills playing as a team. Macey Andriske’s ability to read the plays was superb. Picking off team passes, she sent the ball down to the likes of Peggy Thornton and Alice Siale for fast break lay ups. With comfortable wins, we placed top in our pool.

Finals saw us playing against Trinity Lutheran College. On a roll from our previous wins, the girls made no hesitation in securing a strong start and lead. Remi McClelland’s height and speed were essential in securing rebounds and intercepts. Our left-hander, Lucy O’Bryan, excelled in her ability to lay up perfectly on fast breaks.

Our grand final game saw us facing Merbein P–10 College. Knowing their strengths from our first encounter, we knew they would be hungry for a win. They came out guns firing, scoring six points quickly to our zero. A quick time-out settled the team. With hard work and positivity, we inched back their lead, pushing ahead with great goals by our girls and the incredible defence and rebounding skills of Felicity Pike. (Her rebounds defined our game.) Our girls pushed ahead, demonstrating excellent ball skills while keeping sharp eyes on goals to maintain the lead. Even with a final push by Merbein, our steadiness and patience demonstrated our ability to play smart and poised even under pressure.

Now we look to Bendigo for the next stage!
