Learning

Numeracy

In Maths this fortnight, the children have been busy exploring numbers and data in fun and practical ways. They have been learning how to collect information and record their answers using tally marks, before making statements about what they discovered. The students collected information about some of the things they liked to eat and discussed their findings as a class.

We have also been strengthening our counting on strategies. To practise this, the children played “Ready, Steady, Add!”—our own version of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Whilst playing the game students were able to use number lines to help them count on and other strategies such as counting from the biggest number.

Another focus has been on doubling numbers, which we discovered simply means adding the same number again. Through games, activities, and lots of practice, the children have become more confident with their doubles facts which is an important skill that will support them as they move on to more complex number work.

It has been wonderful to see the children so engaged, curious, and excited to use their mathematical thinking in creative ways.

Literacy

In our recent literacy lessons, students have been learning about the “magic e” rule. They are now becoming confident in recognising and using it in isolation, and our next step is encouraging them to apply this knowledge in their own writing.

We have also begun exploring the difference between using ‘k’ and ‘c’ at the beginning of words. A simple way we teach this is:

  • ‘k’ is used before the vowels i and e (e.g., kite, kept)
  • ‘c’ is used before the vowels a, o, u (e.g., cat, cot, cup)

Although there are a few exceptions to these rules, this strategy helps students make informed spelling choices as they write.

Heart words

This week we have been reviewing the heart words 'she, he' and 'there'.  Our new heart word is because. It's a long one but knowing that it has 7 letters in it, helps. We also discussed how it can help us make conjunction sentences by joining two short sentences together.

Book Week

We had a wonderful time celebrating Book Week at school! The students looked fantastic in their costumes and proudly joined in the parade, showing off their favourite book characters. Our Special Friends Morning was also a highlight, with lots of smiles, shared stories, and fun activities. It was a joyful celebration of reading, and the children really enjoyed being part of the special day.

Thanks for all your support.
