Specialist Happenings

Visual Arts
The year 6 have finally started their sustainable fashion/wearable art project. During the rest of this term, in between some other important activities like sail decorating and mural making they will develop their own wearable art. They will be cutting, sewing, redesigning, embroidering, decorating and everything in between. This project has started in a flurry of excitement and I can honestly say, it has something for everyone wherever their interests may lie. We are aiming to culminate in a sustainable fashion parade at an assembly in term 4. It's wonderful to see everyone so motivated, and not only learning some art skills and design skills but learning all about why sustainability in fashion is so important.
A big thank you to all who donated unwanted items for the kids to repurpose. We ended up with quite an array.
At the same time as this we are continuing with the whole school project and decorating a sail for an upcoming sail by celebration through Brighton Yacht Club
Keep creating!

Mandarin
This week, our Grade 1/2 students continued their learning on the topic of weather. They are now becoming confident in recognising different weather words in Chinese and, most excitingly, many students were able to write the Chinese characters on their own!
It has been wonderful to see their progress and independence as they connect spoken Mandarin with written characters. Keep up the great work, Grade 1/2!
This week, our Grade 3/4 students continued learning about telling the time in Chinese. They are now not only able to read and say the time, but also place it into the correct time frame such as 早上 (early morning), 上午 (morning), 中午 (noon), 下午 (afternoon), and 晚上 (evening).
Students have also been practising recognising and writing these new words in Chinese characters, showing great progress in both reading and writing. It’s exciting to see them combining their knowledge to create more accurate and detailed sentences about time!
This week, our Grade 5/6 students continued building on their topic of animals and colours by adding new vocabulary for body features. With this knowledge, they are now able to use colours to describe different parts of animals in full Chinese character sentences.
For example, they can write:大猩猩的毛是黑色和灰色,它的头很大。(Dà xīngxing de máo shì hēisè hé huīsè, tā de tóu hěn dà.)– “The gorilla’s fur is black and grey, and its head is very big.”
It has been fantastic to see students creating longer, more descriptive sentences in Mandarin, showing both their creativity and growing confidence with the language.
You are all amazing!

Science
The students have focussed on: -
Foundation - Movement
The foundation students have continued their focus on movement. We considered how functional square wheels would be. We took it in turns to try to ride a scooter with square wheels and then shared riding at a scooter with round wheels. The students then brainstormed how many ways they could get to school without walking.
Level 1 & 2 - Mixtures
This week, Level 1 and 2 have been sorting a mixture of Lego, nails and beads. The first time they sorted they did it manually. The second time we added a magnet to remove any metals. The final sort used Wilko's amazing conveyor belt system. The students reflected on the efficiency of each sort and decided that the conveyor belt would certainly expedite the sorting process.
Level 3 & 4 - Habitats and Food Chains
Level 3 and 4 have studied the amazingly complex pond habitat. They have considered what animals and plants thrive in these habitats. They have started analysing and modelling the food chains of different animals.
Level 5 & 6 - Soils and Erosion
Our senior students have been considering the composition of soils and the impact of erosion. They loved engaging in an experiment called Cookie Crumble, which modelled the impact of rain on soils. Afterwards they have been considering ways to reduce erosion, including using weed matting to protect top soils.
