Foundation Learning Itinerary

2025 LEARNING ITINERARY
What are we learning in Foundation?
The School Wide Key Understanding we are exploring this term is;
Sharing stories helps us learn and connect to ourselves, people and places.
Our first Big Idea linked to this understanding is;
My family and I have stories to share.
We expect this portion of our Inquiry to go for approximately 3 weeks.
We have broken down this Big Idea into four key stages. These stages are;
- I have a family.
- My family is made up of different people.
Family groups have similarities and differences.
- My family has changed over time.
To enhance this portion of our Inquiry, in English we will explore these texts;
My Heart - Katrina McKelvey (Picture Story Book)
Koala Lou - Mem Fox (Picture Story Book)
A Handful of Buttons - Carmen Parets Luque (Picture Story Book)
The English concepts that we will explore through these texts are;
- Sentence fluency
- Summarise & retell
The Maths concepts that we will explore through this Big Idea are;
Counting & Subitising: representing practical situations that involve equal sharing and grouping with physical and virtual materials and use counting or subitising strategies.
We are continuing our whole school Wellbeing program called RRRR: Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships. The program teaches social and emotional learning and respectful relationships. Our focus is Personal and Cultural Strengths.
The main Wellbeing concept that we are exploring includes:
Families are different.
Towards the end of this Inquiry, we will communicate with families about our next Big Idea. As we encourage students to be agents of their own learning, we remain flexible on pacing which means our Inquiry may move faster than originally planned, or may require more time with one or more concepts.
To support your child's learning in English we encourage reading from a wide range of sources at home. If you would like to supplement this with any digital resources, the iPad apps Hairy Phonics, or ABC Pocket Phonics may be worth exploring.
To support your child's learning in the Math concepts the online resource Love Math is suggested.
If you have any questions about this Inquiry, or you have any skills, resources, experiences or talents that may help us as we explore the concepts, please contact your classroom teacher. If you have any craft supplies or materials to donate please leave them in the donation drawers at Stela’s entrance doorway.
Formal assessment will be communicated through Student-led Conferences and Semester reports at the end of the semester.
With kindness,
Foundation Team
