Communication @ TLSC

Keeping track of your child's progress
The school uses Compass as the primary communication tool to inform parents about the progress of their child and their ability to achieve a Satisfactory result in their subjects each semester. These Compass posts are designed to keep students and parents informed in a timely manner to help support improvement. We ask all parents to speak to their children regarding their semester report, progress reports, and any other Compass notifications received, to celebrate strengths and identify areas for further improvement.
Compass is used in the following ways (these can also be found on the attached infographic: ‘Communication@TLSC’):
- Progress Reports – issued to students and parents every six weeks
- Not Ready to Learn notification – where a student is not ready to engage in learning in any given lesson (eg. not prepared with correct materials or not using class time effectively).
- Positive Behaviour displayed – where a student has demonstrated exemplary behaviour in relation to one of the school values (Respect, Commitment, Safety)
- Student At Risk notification – where a student is not meeting basic expectations consistent with the requirements of the TLSC Promotion Policy, regarding lack of commitment to learning in a particular subject.
- Year 7-10 Non-Completion of work / VCE Not SAC or Coursework Ready notifications – where a student has not completed sufficient coursework or submitted an assessment task.
- Not Satisfactory Completion notification - formal notification that a student has not met the requirements of the subject.
We acknowledge that parents may find the level of communication a lot to manage at times, however the intention is to best support the student in meeting their expectations.
Understanding the TLSC Promotion Policy
The TLSC Promotion Policy was created in 2024 as a means of clarifying the school’s expectations of its students and establishing clear processes for determining a student’s readiness to be promoted to the next year level. The school encourages students to demonstrate the school value of commitment by supporting them to complete all work to the best of their ability. Students are expected to take responsibility for their learning by participating in learning activities and demonstrating that they are ready to learn. The basic expectations of students include: high attendance, punctuality, bringing correct materials, using class time effectively, completing coursework requirements, meeting deadlines and submitting work to the best of their ability.
On end of semester reports, students receive a TLSC Semester Result for each subject at Years 7-11. This result provides an overall Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory result. To receive a Satisfactory semester result, students must have met the following criteria:
- Achieve an overall average of At Standard for the Commitment rating on Progress Reports for the semester
- Submit each summative assessment task to the best of their ability (excludes Insufficient evidence)
- Meet the requirement of attending at least 90% of classes (Sub School Teams will exercise discretion for students with known circumstances)
- Achieve a minimum of 40% on the semester exam (Year 10 & 11 only)
Students receiving multiple Not Satisfactory results may not meet the overall requirements for promotion to the next year level as per the College’s promotion policy. Students who in semester 1 are at risk of promotion in 2026 are identified and supported by the Sub-school to make improvements across semester 2.
