Secondary School Nursing Program

Updates from the Secondary School Nursing Program

My name is Bron, and I am the new Secondary School Nurse at TLSC.  I am usually at the school on Thursdays and Fridays, and work with the wellbeing team to support the school community in addressing contemporary health and social issues facing young people and their families. The School Nursing Program differs from the first aid support provided by the wonderful nurse at TLSC.

In future newsletters, I will provide health updates and information on relevant health topics and services. If there are any topics you would like covered or if you would like information on the Secondary School Nursing Program, please email Bronwyn.Anderson@education.vic.gov.au

Health Updates from Term 3

Eyecare Program:

The visiting Optometrist saw 139 students over 11 days. Out of the 139 students, they identified 12 (9%) as requiring glasses or an update in prescription. Every student was given their report at the end of the eye test and if glasses were required, the prescription was written on the report.

Australian Dental Health:

The Australian Dental Health van visited the school and provided dental care for 88 students. Some of these students required interventions, such as x-rays or fillings, which were undertaken on campus.  They will be visiting again in 2026.

Vic Kids Eat Well (VKEW):

TLSC is working with IPC to implement the VKEW Program. VKEW is a Victorian Government program focusing on transforming the food and drink environments where kids spend their time. VKEW identifies four key actions and provides clear, simple and achievable steps to making healthy food and drink options available for kids.

TLSC will be working with student leaders and IPC to review current food options and identify healthier alternatives.

Active Schools:

TLSC is participating in the Active Schools program. Active Schools aims to ensure that all Victorian students have the skills, confidence and motivation to be active in life.  It supports active living through 6 key priority areas including quality education, school sports, active classrooms, active tractive, active reaction and supportive school environment.

TLSC will be working with Active Schools to support students across these domains, with a particular interest in engaging with priority populations, including female students. On the 11th September, a collection of students will be engaging in the Girls Get Active Forum which aims to provide direction on next steps within Active Schools.
