Energy Module Update – ResourceSmart Schools

This year we have been working on the energy module for ResourceSmart Schools. You can watch this video made by Eco Club members highlighting some of our energy-saving measures.

The energy module  began with some Year 6 students conducting an energy audit with Bella from CERES, and a follow-up audit was completed by Graham and myself. Several improvements were made as a result:

  • A faulty light timer was fixed to prevent outside security lights lights being left on during the day.
  • Graham set the timer on the staff hot water system to stop it heating after hours.
  • A timer is being added to the library computer so it won’t stay on overnight.
  • Draft-proofing of the staffroom door is planned.

As part of the module, teachers took part in a professional development session with Andrew Vance which focused on energy use in schools and the curriculum. Teachers now have access to the solar monitoring app, which allows them to use live solar data in maths lessons.

Year 6 students are also learning about renewable energy through solar car activities.

Other ongoing initiatives include:

  • A feasibility study into adding a battery system in future.
  • New signage going up in classrooms to remind staff of energy-saving steps.
  • Deeper analysis of the bills to understand energy use after hours.

With the extensive solar setup and long-standing commitment to sustainability, FPS continues to make renewable energy and conservation part of everyday life at school and is setting a great example to students and the wider community.
