Foundation Spotlight

Busy, Busy, Busy!

Term three has been busy! We’ve already had Science week, Book week, and swimming every Wednesday!

The students have done such an amazing job at getting themselves ready for swimming each week. At the pool, they have been great at organising their belongings and getting themselves dressed independently. They are getting quicker and quicker every week!

Below you will find some quotes from the students about their favourite part of swimming so far:

  • Going on the bus. ~ George, FB
  • Swimming over the seaweed. ~ Mae, FB
  • Learning the safety signs for lifeguards. ~ Sohi, FB
  • I like swimming in the deep pool and pushing the boards. ~ James, FC
  • I like swimming around and going under the water. ~ Flint, FC

The Foundation students have now learnt all the characters of the alphabet, the floss letter chitter chants, and have been learning about consonant blends at the beginning and end of words. Soon they will be learning more about digraphs, like ‘ck’ in ‘black duck’ and ‘ch’ in ‘chicken and chips’.

This term in writing the students have been learning about conjunctions. You may have noticed an increase of your students asking ‘Why?’ recently. This is because we have been making our writing more interesting by answering the ‘why’ in sentences. Students have been answering their ‘why’ with an additional sentence, using the conjunction ‘because’. For example, “A pig ran because it was scared.” Later in the term students will also be investigating using ‘but’ as a conjunction to add contrast to their sentences. For example, “ I liked the movie but it was too long.”

Below you will find examples of their amazing work:

In maths, Foundation has begun learning all about measuring. Students have investigated length and height, comparing objects in the classroom and yard as either short or tall/long. Students have used their hands and feet to measure objects, even creating ‘foot-rulers’ traced from their own feet! These ‘rulers’ have been used to make informal measurements to compare common classroom objects. E.g. The table is 9 feet long.

Foundation students have just finished learning all about mass. They have turned their bodies into balance scales hefting objects to compare the concepts of heavy and light. They really enjoyed predicting  Soon we will be talking about capacity

Below you will find some photos of some objects/things they have been measuring.
