Supporting Staff with Mathematics Teaching

This term, we have been fortunate to welcome back Hannah Marino, a mathematics consultant who has been leading professional learning sessions with FPS teachers.

Hannah has been guiding us through the Launch, Explore, Summarise lesson model in Mathematics and showing how it connects with explicit teaching practices outlined in the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0).

The Launch, Explore, Summarise approach encourages students to build deep mathematical understanding by:

  • Launching the task with clear expectations and connections to prior learning.
  • Exploring strategies and problem-solving approaches, supported by explicit teaching.
  • Summarising learning by making thinking visible and drawing out key concepts as a whole class.

Through this professional learning, which forms part of our Numeracy Annual Implementation Plan goals, staff are strengthening their ability to design lessons that are purposeful, engaging, and inclusive for all learners. Hannah’s guidance is helping us to refine our practice so that students are not only developing strong foundational skills, but also confidence and creativity as mathematical thinkers.

Below are some of the problems that FPS teachers worked through to build their understanding of the Launch, Explore, Summarise lesson model.

What solutions can you find?
