God’s creation: Through the eyes of a Preschooler

“We must teach our children to smell the earth, to taste the rain, to touch the wind, to see things grow, to hear the sun rise and night fall – to care.”

John Cleal

At the end of Term 1, we were blessed to have Grandparents' Day, and our beautiful grandparents and special friends were invited to purchase seeds to help establish our ‘Emmaus Eats’ edible garden!

During the holidays, our Preschool children planted a variety of seeds and seedlings. This term, we’ve been nurturing them with regular watering and care, patiently watching and waiting for signs of growth. The excitement when we noticed the first sprouts emerging from the soil was a wonderful discovery!

With the change of season, there have also been many observations in our outdoor learning environment. Each day, a discovery is waiting to be found! To extend children’s interest, we have been taking some time to really investigate what is growing in our ELC yard. Searching, looking intently with purpose and inquisitively. With time and space to explore, there has been much to discover. As part of our inquiry, we have been using various creative arts media, and in this project, we used digital photography to capture and record our discoveries.

Each child was invited to capture something they found interesting in God’s creation. Each child has the same invitation, the same outdoor area, yet each photo is unique and as each individual child, their perspective is their own.

We look forward to further planting of our ‘Emmaus Eats garden’ and harvesting the fruits of love and labour in the coming months!

Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so.” -Genesis 1:11 (NIV)

Why is this significant?

Children develop understandings of themselves and their world through active, hands-on investigation.  A supportive, active learning environment encourages all children’s engagement in learning, which can be recognised as deep concentration and complete focus on what captures their curiosity and interests. Children bring their being to their learning. They have many ways of seeing the world, different processes of learning and their own preferred learning styles
