Grade 5 Update – Reflecting on a Wonderful Term

As we approach the halfway mark of the year, it’s been a joy to reflect on the tremendous growth our Grade 5 students have made so far. While there have been challenges along the way, the students have consistently shown a positive attitude toward their learning. This mindset has helped them continue to improve and support one another throughout the term.

Literacy Learning

This term, our literacy focus has been on Australian history and culture. We’ve completed two novels exploring Aboriginal culture and are currently reading an anthology that shares the stories of people from different nationalities arriving in Australia over time. Through these texts, students have:

  • Created character analyses
  • Written a factual recount about the Aboriginal warrior Jandamarra
  • Begun crafting their own non-fiction narratives

In addition, we’ve been expanding our vocabulary by exploring a variety of prefixes and suffixes, and applying spelling rules when modifying base words.

Mathematics

In Maths, we’ve covered a wide range of topics:

  • Placing fractions and decimals on number lines
  • Converting between improper fractions and mixed numerals
  • Creating nets for 3D shapes

Students have shown great progress in their understanding and application of these concepts.

Religious Education

Our current RE unit is deepening our understanding of the Sacraments, following our earlier focus on the story of Pentecost. These lessons are helping students connect more deeply with their faith and the traditions of the Church.

Thank you for your continued support throughout the term. I’m looking forward to the rest of the year ahead! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me via ClassDojo or email.

Warm regards,

Josh
