Celebrating Culture Through Art: NAIDOC Week Project

As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations last year, students from both the Primary and Middle School collaborated on a special project titled Kaadadjiny Beenyup Boodja—a Noongar phrase meaning Learning on Byford Land. This meaningful initiative was led by parent and local Noongar artist Jacinta Anderson.

Jacinta is a proud Noongar yorga with ancestral ties to the Mineng area in the Great Southern, the Yuet area in the Wheatbelt, and the Whadjuk region. Under her guidance, students created three stunning artworks:

  • The first piece represents First Nations peoples’ deep connection to Country and our shared responsibility to care for and preserve the land.

  • The second piece celebrates community and learning, depicting a meeting place that symbolises our school as a space where students, teachers, parents, and community members come together each day.

  • The third piece focuses on journey and growth—reflecting both our development as a growing K–12 College and the personal learning journeys of each student from Kindergarten through to Year 12 and beyond.

We are thrilled to share that these artworks have been transformed into a beautiful mural at the new bus stop on Mead Street, behind Salvado Catholic College. This was made possible through the support of the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.

We extend our sincere thanks to Jacinta for sharing her cultural knowledge and artistic talents with our students, and to the Shire for honouring this project and showcasing the students' work in such a meaningful public space.

Year 9 Outdoor Education - Manjedal Excursion

On Monday 19th May, all Year 9 Outdoor Education students participated in a one-day excursion to Manjedal Activity Centre. Throughout the day, students rotated through three outdoor activities: wall climbing, orienteering, and camp cooking.

As part of their preparation, students planned and brought ingredients to cook a meal appropriate for a camp setting. Using the College’s Trangia stoves, they demonstrated their ability to cook safely and independently in an outdoor environment.

During the orienteering challenge, students put their mapping and navigation skills to the test—reading maps, using landmarks, and working in teams to find designated checkpoints around the bush course. The wall climbing activity encouraged students to push their limits, build trust, and show perseverance as they scaled the climbing wall.

The day provided an excellent opportunity for students to apply their skills in a real-world context while working collaboratively and embracing the challenges of outdoor learning.

A special thank you to the following staff for their support and supervision on the day: Mr Wornes, Ms Gates, and Mrs Sundararajan. Your assistance helped make the camp a valuable and enjoyable experience for all students.

Well done to all involved!

Year 9 Students Explore Career Pathways through TAFE Taster Program

A group of 16 enthusiastic Year 9 students recently participated in the Career Taster Program hosted at the Murdoch TAFE campus. This valuable initiative aims to give students early exposure to a range of vocational education and training (VET) opportunities.

The focus of this session was on Hairdressing and the Beauty Industry, providing students with an insightful overview of what a career in this dynamic field involves. Throughout the day, students engaged in practical, hands-on training activities, gaining a real-world understanding of the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the industry.

Students were treated as adult learners, offering them a unique opportunity to experience the structure and expectations of a TAFE learning environment. This approach not only gave them a taste of industry-relevant training but also helped build their confidence in navigating post-school educational pathways.

A special thank you to Ms Charlotte Gates for generously giving her time to accompany and support the students during this rewarding experience.

Looking ahead, the next Career Taster Program will focus on Building and Trades and is scheduled to take place on Monday, 23rd June (Week 9). All places for this session have already been filled by students who nominated their interest earlier in the term.

These programs continue to play a crucial role in helping students make informed decisions about their future career pathways.
