                                                                 Harmony Day

Last week we have been learning about Harmony Day. We have learnt when it is, what people do to celebrate the day and why we have it. Harmony Day is celebrated on the 21st of March every year. Harmony Day was created in 1999 to represent that Australia is a multicultural country with people from all over the world who live here. On Harmony Day people might wear clothes that represent their culture or wear orange because orange is the official colour of Harmony Day. Harmony Day is to celebrate everyone, no matter where they are from.

To celebrate Harmony Day the Year 5s have made wristbands, completed word searches, made Harmony Day globes and Canva posters with lots of facts and information we have learnt about Harmony Day.

We hope you have all had an amazing Harmony week and day!

                                             Cheltenham Secondary School Excursion

On Friday 7 March all Year 5 & 6 classes went on a excursion to Cheltenham Secondary College. Some Year 5 & 6 classes went on a tour at the start, while the rest of us went at the end of the excursion. We all had a lovely walk around the school seeing where different classes were and the locker rooms, study places and also all different lunch eating areas or hang out places.

All Year 5 & 6 classes participated in science experiments either at the start or end of the tour. 5B was one of the first classes to do the experiments with Mr C, and the following experiment was a time nobody will ever forget, with a fun and exciting result.

Mr C used gas to blow up bubbles to a specific range of width and height, just so the bubbles wouldn’t overflow. Two chosen students were to come up to the front and light a candle on the end of a one metre ruler, and the second student was the one to light the bubbles, which made a colossal flame that heated up the room. If you were close enough, you could feel the heat on your arm.

                                                                               Mathematics

This term in Mathematics we have been learning about decimals and fractions. We haveused things like decimats that help with learning fractions and decimals.

Also before every Mathematics lesson we do a warm up, including fun math games, times tables and how many number sentences we can make, that equals a number our teacher gives us. We also made skateboards with patterns that included angles, which is another thing we learnt. We put them on display in our classrooms.

In preparation for NAPLAN we have been split up into groups. These groups helped us understand what test conditions would be like and how much time we would get. We also revised things from early on in our school experience. All the year 5s got split into the classrooms with the amazing teachers; Mr Hickey, Mrs JD and Mr Littlechild who helped us understand the concept of NAPLAN.
