Year 2

Celebrating Harmony Day in Year 2

For Harmony Week, Year 2 classes engaged in a creative activity that celebrated the diversity within our classrooms. Students learnt that Harmony Day is not only about recognising our differences but also about celebrating the values of unity, kindness, and acceptance that bring us all together!

Students collaborated to craft a "Harmony Tree," a project that allowed them to learn more about each other's cultural backgrounds while working together as a team. By tracing and decorating hands with symbols that represented their personal identities and cultural traditions, students reflected on what makes them unique.  The finished "Harmony Trees" have become a vibrant display of the diversity in our classrooms, reminding us of the importance of respect and inclusion!

This term, our Inquiry topic has focused on exploring the concept of families. Students have been learning to identify what makes families special and discussing the values that are important to different families. They then incorporated their research on families into the "Harmony Tree," making the activity a perfect complement to their exploration.

Going to the beach is important to my family because we like playing in the water and having fun together. Most of my family are from the Philippines, where it's very hot. I visit the Philippines and see my grandmother often. - Kira

Scotland is important to my family because it's the country where my family have come from. Unicorns are also special, as they are Scotland's National animal. My family like to protect animals and the environment. - Naomi

AFL footy is important to my family. We watch footy together a lot and we like to talk about it over dinner. We all barrack for Melbourne Demons Footy Club! - Parker

Soccer is important to me and my family. My team that I play for is called the Red Wolves. Soccer makes my whole family happy. Some Fridays we watch the soccer together as a family.  Love is also very important for me and family. Even if we get mad at each other, we still show love. - Mia

My mum is from Malaysia and we both like to eat spring rolls. I like bunnies and so does everyone in my family. One of my favourite colours is orange because I have orange hair. My other mum is from Australia. -Ivy

I came from Denmark but then when I was five months old my family and I moved to Germany for six years. After that we moved to Australia. Then I enjoyed every little bit in Australia. - Maya

We had to make a hand and colour it in, to look like the colour of our parents and our grandparents' flag. -Tiffany

For Harmony week we made a hand tree, we coloured our hands in with things about our cultures. We stuck them on a tree to show that everyone belongs in our classroom. -

Let’s celebrate Harmony Day by sharing, learning, and growing together. No matter where we come from, we all belong!
