Year 1

Harmony Week in Year 1
Last week, we celebrated Harmony Week. A special time to recognise and embrace the diversity that brings our community together. Harmony Week is all about inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone.
In Year 1, we marked the occasion by creating a Family Artefact Museum on Wednesday, 19th March. Each student brought in a special artefact that represented their family’s culture, traditions, or history. It was wonderful to see the children proudly sharing their artefacts with their peers as they toured the different classrooms. For those who couldn’t bring in an item, photos or drawings were shared instead, allowing everyone to take part in the experience.
The artefacts included a variety of meaningful items, such as musical instruments, items of clothing, medals, fans, photographs etc.
"My book is important to my family because it is in Polish and represents Poland. My Mum is from Poland." - Mila
"My bear is important to my family because it was my mums toy from long ago." - Swara
"My toys are important to my family because they are from Japan and my dad is from Japan." - Ren
"My clapsticks are important to me because they are Aboriginal and I am Aboriginal." - Ivy
My baby book is important to me because my pop made it for me and he makes one for us every year." - Sophia
"My red pocket is special because my family celebrates Chinese New Year. I get money." - Ian
"My pyramid is special because it is from Egypt. And the Pharaohs made the real pyramids and they were born before the people." - Zaha
In addition to the museum, our Year 1 students also created art installations where they decorated handprints with the flag of their family’s country of origin. This activity was a wonderful way for students to reflect on their heritage while recognising and respecting the diverse cultures within our school community.
It was a fantastic week of learning, sharing, and celebrating what makes us unique while coming together as one. Thank you to all the families who contributed to making Harmony Week such a special and meaningful experience for our students! 😊
