Sustainability @ TPPS

Preps have been learning about the secrets of seeds!
They know that a little seed wakes up if you water it. It grows roots down into the soil and shoots up leaves above the ground. To watch this process, they are growing seeds in glass jars in their classroom.
They have been learning how to water the plants in the garden and checking if plants are needing water or not by testing the moisture in the soil.
Grade 5 have been working in the garden, preparing the beds for new vegetables. They have also explored the benefits of trees, thinking about how trees help our environment, our animals, other plants and us! We couldn’t live without trees!
In Grade 6, our students have investigated the new Wurundjeri season of Iuk which happens around this time of year. The Manna Gum flowers in March. This is a special tree. It grows up to around 50m tall, provides great shade, bees use its flowers to make honey, and koalas love eating its leaves. Wurundjeri people can use its wood to make shields, drinking vessels and medicines. Gliders, pardalotes and powerful owls use the hollows as habitats.
The word Wurundjeri means People of The Manna Gum.
The Grade 6 students produced beautiful and clever posters about the features of Iuk season. They are displayed on our Sustainability board just outside the staff room if you would like a closer look at their amazing work.
On Friday Ms Conn and Miss Demetriou went to the Learning For Sustainability Conference in Hawthorn.
We learned so much and got so many inspiring ideas for teaching Sustainability in school. The keynote speaker was Millie Ross from Gardening Australia who shared many of her amazing experiences from around the world and her understanding of our part to play in protecting the environment.
Ms Conn also got to meet a platypus!
