Heidi Dowling, Model United Nations Captain
Model United Nations at Mt A for Term 1 is in full swing. We had a first MUN afternoon for the year, complete with pizza and snacks. We debated the topic of domestic insurrections, and whether we should enforce international human rights law in the way we deal and manage them.
It was truly inspiring to see students speak up and passionately debate their countries views and positions, even if they are slightly controversial! Overall, due to a veto from France, the resolution did not pass. However, the afternoon was truly one to remember!
We also recently had the opportunity to hone our MUN skills outside of school, with five of our MUN club members – myself, Samira, Lizzie, Emma and Charlie – attending UN Youth Australia’s National Conference with the theme of ‘Politics and the Economy.’ From a personal perspective, sometimes it was really hard to place my own biases aside and to adopt my country’s (Russian Federation) views. However, this is all part of the fun of MUN and allows us to see different perspectives. Overall, the weekend was very enjoyable, and we have formed lifelong connections. We cannot wait to attend more UN Youth events throughout the year.
I encourage anyone with a keen interest in international relations or global issues to come join as in A202 every Tuesday for MUN Club. Everyone, including complete beginners, are welcome!
Our talented Drama Troupe took centre stage at this week’s assembly with their very first performance. This was powerful piece in recognition of International Women’s Day. Through compelling storytelling and stage presence, they shared an inspiring message about the importance of standing together and standing up for each other. Their performance encouraged our community to reflect on the role we all play in fostering inclusivity and empowerment. Congratulations to our Drama Troupe for their dedication and artistry in bringing this important message to life! Thank you to Ms Conway for leading them with passion and pride.
This week, we proudly acknowledged the dedication and skill of our school’s debaters in a special assembly presentation. Each member of the team was introduced to the school community, showcasing their confidence and commitment to critical thinking and persuasive speaking.
A special moment was shared as our enthusiastic Year 7 debaters received their first palm cards, marking the beginning of their debating journey. Additionally, those who have devoted three years to debating were awarded a well-earned badge, recognising their perseverance and passion for the art of argument. Well done to all our debaters, we look forward to an exciting season ahead!
