Introducing our 2025 RSL Liaisons

The RSL Liaison program in an initiative between the Kedron-Wavell RSL Sub-branch and district secondary schools. This year, Caitlyn and Miranda were selected to represent Mount Alvernia College in this role. In this article, these students explain the role and why they applied for the position.
From Caitlyn
Each year two students from Mount Alvernia College and other surrounding high schools are selected to represent their school at the Kedron-Wavell RSL Sub-branch. This student liaison program invites students to attend monthly meetings at the Sub-branch to share the goings on at their school, partake in many activities celebrating and remembering those who have served, and are serving, our country and much more! This is the first program of its kind in Australia and is organised by Mr. Greg Peake OAM who wanted to create a way to share more information about how the Sub-branch was supporting the community.
At Mount Alvernia College, the liaison position is considered a leadership opportunity for Year 11 students. When the position was advertised last year, there was an overwhelming number of applicants for this respected position. This meant there were around twenty interviews for Ms Stower and the past liaisons, Ameah Reed (2025 College Captain) and Sofia Pezzetta (2025 Cultural Captain). With such high demand to represent the College in this position, we are excited to be selected in this role and are very grateful to have the support of the students.
From Miranda
I wanted to be a liaison because I have always had a profound interest in history and enjoy learning about my family members that fought in Vietnam and Papua New Guinea. This passion began in Year 6 when I attended a breakfast in the iCentre. Heather Morris, the author of the Tattooist of Auschwitz was the guest speaker. After purchasing and reading her novel, I read all the books in my primary school library related to this topic, which helped me develop an understanding of war and enthusiasm for history. I have always admired the RSL’s involvement in our community, and I have always attended the services. I am an active and aspiring leader within the school community and am engaged in many aspects of college life. As I intend to continue studying History into the future, being RSL Liaison Officer was the perfect opportunity for me.
From this position, I hope to continue my leadership journey and develop skills such as communication and public speaking. I also want to serve the community and create new connections with members of the RSL, all well as students from neighbouring schools. I hope that this position will help me gain a comprehensive understanding into our history and insight into the lives of ANZACs. Furthermore, I will have the opportunity to give back to the community by being involved in charity events through the RSL.
