Grade 6 Humanities – Term 1 Highlights
It has been an exciting and hands-on start to the year in Grade 6 Humanities! This term, students explored two science-based topics: States of Matter – Mixtures and Solutions, and Electricity and Circuits.
During our States of Matter unit, students became young scientists, investigating soluble and insoluble substances through a range of fun experiments. They learned how to design a fair test, explored how variables can influence results, and worked collaboratively to test different materials. A highlight was recovering substances—using heat to separate soluble materials from solutions and filtration to remove insoluble substances. These activities helped students build confidence in following procedures and drawing their own conclusions from their discoveries.
Our learning continued in the brand-new STEM room as students delved into Electricity and Circuits. They explored how electricity travels from power stations to our homes and identified the essential components needed to create a simple circuit. Students also learned to read and draw circuit diagrams using correct symbols, while developing an understanding of conductors and insulators.
The real excitement came with the hands-on challenges! Students loved experimenting with lightbulbs, motors, batteries, and wires to build their own working circuits. They also investigated electrical safety, learning how to identify potential hazards both in the classroom and at home.
To wrap up the term, students put their skills to the test using circuit kits with a variety of designs to build. This was a fantastic opportunity to apply trial-and-error thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity as they discovered multiple ways to make circuits work.
Overall, it has been a fantastic term of curiosity, exploration, and discovery in Grade 6 Humanities!
