Welcome back to Term 2! How is it already at Week 5? Time certainly flies when you’re having fun. It has been a busy and exciting start to the term in the Support Unit, with many wonderful opportunities for our students and staff.
We would like to warmly welcome our newest permanent staff member, Tori Hill, who has joined us as the teacher of the S12 classroom. Miss Hill has already proven to be a fantastic asset to our team, and we are thrilled to have her as part of our Support Unit community.
Earlier this term, we held our Inclusive Athletics Carnival, which was a huge success. Students enthusiastically participated in a variety of fun and engaging activities, enjoyed a delicious sausage sizzle, and most importantly, had the chance to come together as a whole unit. Events like these are always so special, as they celebrate inclusion, teamwork, and provide opportunities for all students to participate, connect, and have fun.

On Friday, 8th May, some of our senior students and Support Unit teachers attended the Hunter Disability Expo at Newcastle Showground. This valuable excursion gave students the opportunity to explore a wide range of service providers, support organisations, and community groups, all in one accessible space. The expo was an empowering experience, helping students learn more about independence, support services, and future opportunities within the Newcastle and Hunter region.
A particular highlight of the day was meeting James Chapman, also known as “Chappo,” an inspiring TikTok creator and disability advocate. Students and staff were excited to meet him, hear his message, and capture the moment with a group photo.

Our students have also been busy developing their culinary skills in the kitchen this term! Students have worked together to create a range of delicious dishes while learning important skills such as food preparation, kitchen safety, teamwork, and presentation. It has been wonderful to see students building confidence, exploring new flavours, and taking pride in serving up their tasty creations. These hands-on experiences provide valuable opportunities to develop independence, communication, and everyday life skills in a fun and engaging environment.

As part of our Science lessons on sound waves, students in S11 and S3 enjoyed creating their own harmonicas using paddle pop sticks, elastic bands, and paper. Students explored how vibrations create sound and experimented with changing pitch and volume using their handmade instruments. It was a fun, hands-on activity that combined creativity with scientific learning, and students loved testing out the different sounds they could make! Check out the sounds!
We are looking forward to all the exciting events and learning experiences still to come this term!
