St Patrick's Day Celebrations
Last Tuesday, TheirCare participants enjoyed celebrating St Patrick’s Day in a fun and engaging way.
We began by talking about what St Patrick’s Day is and why it is celebrated. The children learned that it is a cultural and religious holiday that celebrates St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. We discussed how the day is often associated with the colour green, shamrocks, and symbols of luck, as well as how people around the world celebrate with decorations, parades, and festive activities.
We then took part in a variety of creative experiences. The children enjoyed completing shamrock colouring sheets, using different shades of green to decorate their work. They also showed great enthusiasm in wanting to make green paper chains to decorate the room. I demonstrated how to create a clover shape using the paper chain technique, which sparked a lot of interest. While many children were excited to try making clovers, they decided to create traditional green chains instead, working together to decorate the space and build a sense of teamwork and pride in their environment.
We also completed another arts and crafts activity, where the children made “pots of gold” using paper plates and cotton balls. The children used water paints to colour the cotton balls, exploring colour mixing and creativity as they worked. This activity encouraged fine motor skills, creativity, and self-expression, while also tying into the theme of luck often associated with St Patrick’s Day.
Throughout the day, the children were engaged, collaborative, and excited to learn about a different cultural celebration while expressing themselves through art and craft activities.
