Tribes

The week we learnt about Reconciliation Week during our Tribes session.

Reconciliation Week is celebrated every year from the 27th of May to the 3rd of June

Reconciliation is about coming together, learning from each other, and building strong friendships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and all Australians.

It is a time to celebrate the stories, cultures, histories and experiences that make Australia special. By learning about and respecting each other, we can help create a kinder, fairer and more connected community for everyone.

We learnt why smoking ceremonies are important.  An Aboriginal smoking ceremony is an ancient, beautiful tradition where special native leaves are burned to create cleansing smoke. It is like a big, warm cultural reset used to welcome visitors, say goodbye to "bad energy," and bring positive vibes for health, peace, and protection.

When Aboriginal people visit a new area, they perform this ceremony to show respect to the land and to the ancestors (the people who lived there a very long time ago). It is a respectful way to say, "Hello land, we are here as friends."
