Year 5 & 6 Digi Tech - Learning Binary
Did you know...
There are 10 types of people in the world — those who understand binary, and those who don't!
001000 001001 001100 001100 001101 or as we now know it, "Hello!"
This term our students have been pulling apart the inner workings of computers and devices. They discovered that under all the apps and games, computers understand just one language, a secret code made entirely of 1s and 0s, called binary.
Students learned to convert between binary and decimal numbers, then mapped every letter to a number (A=1, B=2, C=3… all the way to Z=26). With these new skills, they could decode secret messages and encode their own names, just like real computer scientists.
Try it at home - decode this message!
Use the key below to turn each binary code into a letter.
01001
01100
01111
10110
00101
11001
01111
10101
Key: A=00001, B=00010, C=00011 ...
Convert each code to a number, then find the matching letter. Your child knows the answer!
