Making Every School Day Count

"Attendance is not just about being present; it's about giving children every opportunity to learn, connect, and thrive."

Regular school attendance is one of the most important factors in a child's success at school. While occasional absences due to illness are sometimes unavoidable, being at school every day helps students make the most of their learning opportunities and strengthens their sense of belonging within the school community.

Why Attendance Matters

Learning takes place every day through class discussions, hands-on activities, group work, and individual practice. When students are absent, they miss more than just the lesson content. They miss valuable opportunities to ask questions, receive feedback, collaborate with their peers, and build confidence in their learning.

School attendance helps children develop positive learning habits, establish routines, and engage fully in all aspects of school life.

School Is About More Than Learning

School attendance also plays an important role in children's social and emotional wellbeing. Every day at school provides opportunities for students to:

  • Build and maintain friendships
  • Develop social skills and resilience
  • Participate in classroom and school events
  • Feel connected to their peers and teachers
  • Experience a sense of belonging within the school community

When children miss school regularly, it can become more difficult to maintain friendships, keep up with classroom routines, and stay connected with what is happening at school.

How Families Can Help

Families play a vital role in supporting positive attendance habits. Some helpful strategies include:

  • Encouraging children to attend school every day unless they are genuinely unwell
  • Speaking positively about school and learning
  • Establishing consistent morning and bedtime routines
  • Scheduling appointments outside school hours where possible
  • Avoiding family holidays during school terms
  • Communicating promptly with the school regarding absences

Working Together

If your child is experiencing difficulties attending school due to anxiety, friendship concerns, wellbeing challenges, or other circumstances, please reach out to us. Early communication allows us to work together to provide support and develop strategies that help your child feel safe, confident, and successful at school.

Attendance and Achievement

Extensive Australian research has consistently shown a strong connection between regular school attendance and academic success. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve stronger outcomes in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Every day at school provides opportunities for learning, building friendships, developing confidence, and participating in the life of our school community. Even occasional absences can add up over time, making it harder for students to keep pace with their learning and maintain strong social connections.

Every day of learning, connection, and participation matters. Thank you for your ongoing support in helping your child make the most of every school day.
