GLOBAL CONNECTIONS, LOCAL IMPACT

The many highlights from our Student Representative Council (SRC) continue to earn their place as a regular feature in our Top 5. At this meeting, we heard about the exciting beginnings of an international partnership with the Cambodian school Prek Leap. Together, students will collaborate to tackle a shared issue within their schools. An incredible opportunity to broaden perspectives and build global connections. This partnership officially launches on 15 May, and we’re looking forward to hearing updates as it unfolds.

BIG HEARTS, BIGGER IMPACT

We also celebrated the SRC’s phenomenal fundraising efforts, with an impressive $1,067 raised for the Good Friday Appeal. Next up was Do It For Dolly Day—a national initiative that honours the memory of Dolly Everett and raises awareness about the devastating impact of bullying, while promoting kindness and open conversations. This free dress day, supported by a gold coin donation, was a wonderful way for our community to come together for an important cause. Thank you to everyone for your generous donations.

A SILENCE THAT SPOKE VOLUMES

Our ANZAC Day commemoration was described as nothing short of powerful. In a gym filled with over 1,100 students and staff, an extraordinary silence fell as Vietnam War veteran John Coulson shared his story. No whispers, no movement, not even the faintest fidget. It was a moment of deep respect and reflection that speaks volumes about the impact of his words. This was followed by a spine-tingling bagpipe performance from David Telford, leaving many with goosebumps. By all accounts, it was a profoundly moving tribute, one that will stay with those who attended for a long time.

CELEBRATING THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE PSC SHINE

Recognition continues to be woven into the fabric of PSC. Aaron Smith and Jarni Sewell consistently acknowledge the efforts of students, staff and volunteers who go above and beyond or excel in their roles. At this Council meeting, nine students and one teacher were formally recognised through letters of appreciation, all endorsed by School Council. We are incredibly grateful for their contributions. This culture of recognition strengthens our community and reinforces what matters most….your efforts are seen, valued and deeply appreciated.

LEADING THE WAY IN TEACHING AND LEARNING

Our teachers spent time on the recent Curriculum Day learning more about the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0. The Model places explicit teaching at the heart of everything that teachers do. Pakenham is well placed to implement the VTLM 2.0 into our classrooms as our school adopted an explicit model of teaching well over a decade ago. The Literacy for Learning program which has led to our outstanding NAPLAN and VCE results began here in 2013 and has ensured that Pakenham Secondary is well ahead of the game in this area.

Join a School Council Sub Committee!

Our School Council subcommittees are a great way for students, parents and carers to have a voice, share ideas, and make a real impact on our school community. Whether you have professional experience, a passion for improving student outcomes, or simply want to be more involved, there’s a place for everyone. Subcommittees are collaborative, welcoming, and a valuable way to help shape the future of our school.

And it’s open to students, parents and carers, plus you don’t have to be on School Council to join a subcommittee.

FINANCE SUB COMMITTEE

The Finance Subcommittee supports the responsible management of the school’s budget and resources. Members help review financial reports, discuss funding opportunities, and most importantly ensure spending decisions align with the school’s strategic goals. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to the long-term sustainability and success of the school.

BUILDING AND GROUND SUB COMMITTEE

The Buildings and Grounds Subcommittee focuses on creating safe, welcoming, and engaging learning environments for students and staff. Members contribute ideas and feedback on school facilities, maintenance, landscaping, and future improvement projects. This committee helps shape the physical spaces where our children learn and play.

CURRICULUM SUB COMMITTEE

The Curriculum Subcommittee supports and discusses the teaching and learning programs offered across the school. Members gain insight into educational priorities, student achievement, and curriculum initiatives, while providing valuable student and parent/carer perspectives. It’s an excellent way to engage with and support student learning outcomes.

UNIFORM SUB COMMITTEE

The Uniform Subcommittee reviews and discusses school uniform matters, including practicality, affordability, inclusivity, and presentation. Members may provide feedback on current uniform items, consider future changes, and help ensure the uniform reflects the values and needs of the school community.

All subcommittees meet for approximately 30 minutes each month after school, generally commencing at 4.00 pm or later, providing a flexible and manageable way to get involved in our school community.

We warmly welcome students, parents and carers to be part of these important conversations.

If you are interested in joining a subcommittee, or would like further information, please email pakenham.sc@education.vic.gov.au or contact our General Office on 5945 1433.

We also currently have a parent/carer vacancy on School Council. Joining School Council is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to important decisions, help shape the future direction of the College and represent the voice of our parent community. Please contact the College to find out more.
