Year 1 Bulletin

Learning Intention: To identify the rule or pattern /ft/ within words
Fluency:
Every learning session begins with a whole class activity aimed at building fluency. In Spelling we use Heggerty to help the children build their oral blending and sequencing skills through listening to a script prompted by the teachers.
Whole:
We read a list of 6-8 words that have the same sound that is our focus for the lesson. Today’s focus was to listen to words with the /ft/ ending blend.
Words included: lift, gift, tuft, soft, shift, theft
We say each word again and the children have a go writing each word on their whiteboard. We encourage the children to practise ‘sound-talking’ each word as they write it. (saying the sound/s out loud, listening to each sound while writing)
For example: l-i-ft
We referred to the anchor chart that was created for this lesson and a copy will be included in all students bulletin folders. This showcases the /ft/ sound applied in multiple contexts for a deeper understanding of the focused sound.
Anchor Chart:
Prompts:
- What do you notice about each word?
- What is the same about each word?
- Where is the sound positioned in the word? (beginning, middle or end)
Video:
FT Consonant Blend Sound | FT Blend Song and Practice | ABC Phonics Song with Sounds for Children
We utilise these phonic videos for students to continue learning and applying the focus sound in different contexts. Students get to apply their own iterations of reading and writing the words on their whiteboards, that were shown on the phonics video.
Small:
To consolidate the /ft/ sound the students were asked to complete a worksheet, which allowed for multiple applications of the /ft/ ending blend.
How you might like to continue learning at home:
To help your child build upon their spelling with specific sounds, say a word to your child and prompt them to segment sounds in the word. Continue to say words and prompt your child to segment the sounds (Focus on a specific sound like: /st/ - rest, test, vest, fast). See if your child can recognise the pattern that's repeating in each word.
